Is Cryptosporidium in drinking water quality? ›

Cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine, the chemical we most commonly use to disinfect our drinking water. Outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by Cryptosporidium have been linked to water supplies on a few occasions in the past, both in the UK and around the world.

Epidemiology. Cryptosporidiosis is endemic worldwide; the highest rates are found in low- and middle-income countries. An estimated 823,000 cryptosporidiosis cases occur in the United States each year, of which 9.9% are thought be due to international travel.
