Danse's earliest memories are of growing up as an orphan in the Capital Wasteland. As a child, he made a dangerous living by scavenging the D.C. ruins until he opened a junk stand in Rivet City. It was at that time he befriended a man named Cutler, and together the two friends scraped by as traders.[1] When the Brotherhood came through the city on a recruiting run they both signed on, feeling it was the best chance to make something of themselves.[2]
Sponsored by Paladin Krieg, Danse was singled out from the beginning. Krieg presumably saw the spark of greatness in Danse, a correct prediction as by 2277 Danse had reached the rank of paladin and was given command of his own squad. Danse did not participate in the assault on Adams Air Force Base, and learned after that Paladin Krieg had been among the casualties. Though Danse grieved the loss, he followed Krieg's example by pushing the people entrusted to him to become greater and realise their true potential.[3][4]
One of Danse's achievements as a paladin was earning a post at the newly launched Prydwen with Cutler, then a knight. Launched in 2282, the airship granted the Brotherhood the ability to project power anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard.[5][6] A year into the posting, Cutler disappeared on a routine scouting operation. After convincing his superiors to authorize a search, Danse headed a rescue team to track the missing patrol. They discovered the squad had been ambushed and wiped out near a super mutant hive, all save for Cutler, who had been exposed to the FEV and transformed into a super mutant. With no other recourse, Danse abided by the Brotherhood's protocol and delivered a mercy kill.[7] Cutler's death deeply affected Danse, and from then on he preferred to keep others at a distance for fear of loss.[8] The experience also left him with a deep hatred of super mutants.[9]
Danse continued on to excel as a soldier. In the ideological schism that had sundered the Brotherhood's east coast chapter, he aligned with the traditional utilitarian philosophy that was the order's original doctrine over Elder Owyn Lyons' benevolent and philanthropic agenda. When Arthur Maxson assumed the role of elder, Danse's likemindedness and devotion to his duty led to him becoming one of the highest ranking officers under the new leadership.
As one of the most capable field commanders in the Brotherhood, Paladin Danse was a natural choice to head up a third reconnaissance mission into the Commonwealth. Recon Squad Gladius was dispatched to the region in late 2286 for a tech recovery operation, and, if possible, to determine the fate of the lost recon squad Artemis. No one expected that his expedition would become another turning point in the Brotherhood's history.[10]
The squad crossed the border into the Commonwealth in January 2287, and soon after suffered several equipment losses in skirmishes with raiders, including Knight Keane's power armor.[11] By February, they had established a forward operating base in the Cambridge Police Station.[12] By April, Danse felt Gladius had a strong enough position to begin recovery and search operations. The Corvega assembly plant near Lexington was identified by Scribe Haylen as the first target. Initial recon by Knight-Sergeant Dawes revealed a large raider presence within, but Danse decided to risk breaching their defenses. The attempt was costly: the squad was spotted on approach and came under fire. When Knight Worwick was severely wounded, Danse ordered a general retreat. Knight Brach was killed upon return to Cambridge after stepping on a landmine.[13] Two days later, Worwick's condition turned out to be unsalvageable: injuries from raider gunfire resulted in paralysis and internal bleeding. With less than a 5% chance of recovery, Danse instructed Haylen to euthanize the mortally wounded knight.[14]
Following these significant losses, Danse adopted a more cautious strategy by instead focusing on surveying Boston and its surrounding environs. No casualties were sustained between April and July until a reconnaissance operation at grid reference A113, near Boston International and Fort Strong. The airport was abandoned, but Fort Strong was infested by super mutants. Danse had hoped for Gladius to resupply at the fort's armory, but on approach Knight-Sergeant Dawes was killed and the squad was forced to retreat. The numerous setbacks and casualties did not dissuade Danse's commitment to their mission, but he determined the best way to deal with such locations in the future was with artillery and extreme prejudice.[15] Privately, he started to develop insomnia and frequent headaches.[16]
By October, Gladius happened on the most important discovery of their expedition: unusual energy readings on an extreme high-band spectrum frequency. He concluded they were unlikely to be pre-War and had his team triangulate the signal to identify its origin. They were yet unaware they were tracking the signal emanated by the Institute's Molecular Relay teleporter.[17] The team had become aware of the Institute during their foray into the Commonwealth, with Danse particularly concerned about the potential threat of synthetic humans outnumbering and replacing humanity. The team was unable to establish contact with Scabbard to report their findings due to damage to the police station's antenna. With Haylen unsure of her ability to restore it without parts, Danse refocused his efforts on recovering technology to bolster it by retrieving the deep range transmitter from the nearby ArcJet Systems.[18]
The Sole Survivor might detect Military Frequency AF-95 when approaching Cambridge. The station is a looping broadcast of Scribe Haylen's request for Brotherhood support, triggering the quest Fire Support. At the police station, the surviving members of Gladius are struggling to fend off a large pack of feral ghouls that have injured Knight Reece and killed Knight Keane. Once the ghouls are defeated, Danse expresses he is grateful for the help, yet is aloof and wary of the stranger's intentions.
Down two men, Danse requests the Sole Survivor accompany him to ArcJet Systems to retrieve the needed communication equipment. If the Sole Survivor accepts, they travel to the nuclear engine test facility to find it overrun by Institute synths stripping the location of valuable technology. The pair fight through the facility and recover the transmitter.
Back outside, Danse pays the Sole Survivor for their service with the laser rifle, Righteous Authority. He is cordial in his assessment of the Sole Survivor's performance in battle, though passing a persuasion check gets him to reveal a less gentle critique. Despite this, he extends an offer to join the Brotherhood of Steel faction to the Sole Survivor, providing them the rank of initiate if they accept. If the Sole Survivor declines, they part ways and Danse returns to the police station.
Accepting Danse's offer leads to a short conversation at the Cambridge Police Station with Danse, Scribe Haylen and Knight Reece. The Sole Survivor is encouraged to work for the latter two on various assignments with Danse remaining on site to defend the base.
After the main quest Reunions is complete, Military Frequency AF-95 updates with a new message. Paladin Danse recalls all Brotherhood units to the police station, at which point he and the Sole Survivor travel via vertibird to the newly arrived Prydwen.
Once the Sole Survivor has spoken to Elder Maxson, they can find Danse in the galley of the Prydwen's upper deck where he informs them that he has been reassigned as their sponsor. This entails traveling with them to ensure they uphold the values of the Brotherhood of Steel. Danse explains he took a substantial professional risk by vouching for the Sole Survivor, and misconduct on their part would reflect poorly on him. While accompanying the Sole Survivor, Danse permits his subordinate to take point in their mission course. This means that he will sometimes disapprove of the Sole Survivor's decisions, but typically will not interfere in their dealings with other Commonwealth factions. For example, though the Brotherhood and the Railroad are enemies, Danse will not stop the Sole Survivor from joining the latter, nor will he fire on Railroad members if taken inside their headquarters unless the Sole Survivor comes into conflict with them first.
Elder Maxson's first order for the Sole Survivor to clear Fort Strong of the super mutants and secure a mini-nuke stockpile within. After doing so, Danse will arrive (if he wasn't taken along) and address the Sole Survivor. With a successful persuasion check he will speak on his personal loathing of super mutants and of Cutler. Afterward, he remains behind to oversee the transport of the mini-nukes back to the airport, and can be found again later in the Prydwen's galley.
The Sole Survivor can acquire the quest The Lost Patrol either by speaking to Lancer Captain Kells or by entering range of one of the three distress beacons in the Commonwealth. In the latter case, if Danse is present, he will stop the Survivor to explain the unknown fate of Recon Squad Artemis and insist they continue the search. At each beacon he will have special dialogue, and he will participate in the conversation with Paladin Brandis.
Progressing the main quest alongside the Brotherhood eventually leads to Liberty Reprimed. The Survivor must find and secure a stockpile of nuclear bombs in the Glowing Sea. Just as in Fort Strong, Danse will send the Survivor back to the airport while he remains on-site to protect and conduct transport of the bombs.
After reporting back to Proctor Ingram at the Boston Airport, the Sole Survivor is sent to a furious Elder Maxson. There, they are confronted with the discovery of an infiltrator. In the data dump of the network scanner holotape, Proctor Quinlan learned Paladin Danse was a DNA match to a Gen-3 synth flagged as missing in The Institute's databank. The Brotherhood determines that Danse and the synth M7-97 [19] are one and the same, a complication worsened by the fact that Danse has gone AWOL. The Sole Survivor is ordered to hunt down and kill the rogue synth.
Scribe Haylen interrupts the Sole Survivor's preparations by making a plea on Danse's behalf, then directing them to Recon Squad Gladius' established fallback point: Listening Post Bravo. A forlorn Danse awaits his fate within, as to be determined by the Sole Survivor. Though he had no idea of his true nature and insists he still feels human, he is resolved to die in accordance with the Brotherhood's condemnation of unconstrained, hyperadvanced technology. He directs the Sole Survivor to carry out their orders lest he end things himself, but can be convinced to live via multiple mid-difficulty persuasion checks. If successful, he will give his holotags to the Sole Survivor to decieve Maxson with and prepare to flee the Commonwealth. However, Maxson arrives via vertibird and confronts the pair.
The Sole Survivor must make a decision. They can execute Danse, refuse the order and see Maxson kill Danse, or attempt to persuade Maxson to back down through multiple mid-difficulty speech checks. If he survives the encounter, Danse is stripped of his rank and warned there is a standing kill-on-sight order for him before Maxson departs. The Sole Survivor can then encourage Danse to yet leave the region for his own safety. However, Danse's preference is to remain in the Commonwealth, determined not to abandon the friend who stood up for him.
Danse is a strong, level-headed and loyal Brotherhood of Steel soldier. He maintains the organization's binary worldview in which good and evil are harshly defined and there is little sympathy those caught in between. Danse is often judgemental, openly condemning the existence of ghouls, synths and other deemed "abominations." He believes synths are an abuse of technology by the Institute that threaten very the existence of humanity, moreso than even super mutants, and must be eradicated lest they bring about the end of the human race. Yet despite all this, Danse's convictions are sometimes variable. If reassured his slaying of a friend who'd been transformed into a super mutant was the right thing to do, he'll respond that it was what he was taught by the Brotherhood, but he's not sure if it was right. He's also inconsistent with his approval in regard to the treatment of non-feral ghouls. For example, he likes it if the Sole Survivor tells Kent Connolly not to sell himself short, but hates it if they give the Vault-Tec rep a place to live. At the Slog, he will disapprove yet begrudgingly compliment the ghouls on their ingenuity.
Danse deeply cares about humanity, yet is often frustrated by shortsighted wastefulness or violence. He is reflective on the past and remarks that pre-War artifacts are "more valuable than treasure" as they provide glimpses at moments in time that will never repeat, but is also critical of old America's excesses like decorative fountains and escalators. He pities the people of Diamond City for having to huddle in a stadium for safety when there are plenty of habitable buildings in Boston, pointing to the "barbaric" raiders at the Combat Zone as just one of the problems wrong with the world.
He is not a man of leisure, focusing on his service to the Brotherhood. As such, many activities are foreign to him. He's unacquainted with the game of baseball, considers comic books a waste of time and has never been fishing or seen a "moving picture show." He does however, enjoy listening to Country and Bluegrass music, as evident by his reaction to Magnolia’s music.
Danse utilizes an expansive vocabulary, often expressing simple thoughts in long and roundabout ways. This quirk is noted by Piper who attributes it to his being a synth.

Paladin Danse can be acquired at the shop by any player character that has Charisma. When he is the active companion and there is another player character within two spaces, the owner can exhaust him to move the target character one space in any direction. If the owner has the Idolized trait when they do this, they will lose it.
When the player character performs the camp action, he will become unexhausted. However, if the player character does not have the Idolized trait, he must be discarded.
