How to set checkout defaultRemote origin? ›

defaultRemote configuration variable, we'll use that one for the purposes of disambiguation, even if the <branch> isn't unique across all remotes. Set it to e.g. checkout. defaultRemote=origin to always checkout remote branches from there if <branch> is ambiguous but exists on the origin remote. See also checkout.

git push origin will push the current branch to the branch of the matching name in the remote repository (aka, “branch configured upstream”), if it exists, otherwise, it will not push and notify that the current branch has no remote counterpart (error message: “<branchname> has no upstream branch”).

In the upper-right corner of any page on GitHub, click your profile photo, then click Settings. In the "Code planning, and automation" section of the sidebar, click Repositories. Under "Repository default branch", click Change default branch name now.

When no remote is specified, by default the origin remote will be used, unless there's an upstream branch configured for the current branch. The names of refs that are fetched, together with the object names they point at, are written to . git/FETCH_HEAD .

To change the remote origin URL, use the git remote set-url command, followed by the remote name (usually "origin") and the new URL. Depending on your preferences and access to the remote repository, you can choose between using an HTTPS URL or an SSH URL.

Switching to a remote branch​

To checkout a remote branch, you will need to fetch the contents of the branch using git fetch –all first. Then use the same command git checkout RemoteBranchName to switch to remote branch. You might have noticed that it is the same command used to switch to a local branch.

Unless you specify a different branch, the default branch in a repository is the base branch for new pull requests and code commits. By default, GitHub names the default branch main in any new repository.

To configure Git to perform a git pull from the current branch by default, you can use the git config command to set the pull. default option. This option determines the behavior of the git pull command when you don't specify a branch name.

If you already have a local branch and want to set it to a remote branch you just pulled down, or want to change the upstream branch you're tracking, you can use the -u or --set-upstream-to option to git branch to explicitly set it at any time.
