I bought a few items Tax Free and the store has sealed it in a transparent plastic bag. Passport was presented and receipt is issued at time of shopping. Due to the volume of the facial cream exceeds the hand carry limit, I have to check in the sealed bag when I leave Japan in NRT airport. I try to look up the proper procedure in this situation, the only one applicable is gc. If you plan to put your duty-free items in your checked baggage, please inform the airline staff at the check-in counter before checking in your luggage. A customs officer will come to the check-in counter to check your duty-free items.h Please advise if this is still the proper way to clear the customs.

Just check in the duty free items and scan your entry stamp QR code in your passport at the customs counter after security at the airport

I have never been asked to produce any of the duty free items all my trips (already visited twice this year). I can't comment about high value duty free items as mine are just foodstuff and ordinary everyday use kind of items.

It all goes in checked luggage - no issues. Applies to things like knives, whiskey and a host of other things not allowed in your carry-on. You will not be asked to present the items when leaving.

They can't check everything. So, my understanding is that they will check only people with a suspicious shopping pattern, although occesional random checks may also occur. And around next spring at the earliest, the system is expected to change to a get-a-refund-at-the airport system.
