A money expert has revealed a tiny detail on a gold $2 coin dating back 10 years that can be worth a fortune today.
Commerce teacher Joel Kandiah, otherwise known as The History of Money on TikTok, said a 2012 gold coin featuring a red poppy can be worth as much as $180.

The rare coin was distributed to commemorate Remembrance Day in 2012.
However, the Perth man warned collectors not to “fall for imitations” - as sellers attempt to cash in on a fake version.
In his video titled “Australia’s rarest circulating $2 coin”, the man showed exactly how to detect a fake $2 coin featuring the iconic red flower.
“The 2012 red poppy currently has a value of $180,” Joel said.
“Due to its high value, people have been trying to make imitations and sell them on the market.”
Showing a fake version of the “rare” coin, Joel pointed out the unusual feature of the red poppy.
“As you can see here, they are relatively poor quality, using nail polish on existing gold coins,” he said.
“A genuine red poppy has a clean design and should be flat, not raised. Make sure you understand between the real and a fake one.”
Joel also noted it’s “pretty hard to get a red poppy in perfect condition” on a gold coin.
“A slight chip in the painting won’t impact its value too much,” he added.
According to the Royal Australian Mint, Aussies can face a hefty fine of up to $5,000 for defacing coins, selling or possessing money that has been damaged - or prison for two years.
His video has since been viewed more than 470,000 times, with dozens admitting they have unknowingly spent it.
“I had heaps of those coins, I just bought candy with it,” one wrote.
While another said: “I used one in a toy machine and I still didn’t get the toy.”
