Ethanol and bioethanol are commonly used as fuels and solvents, but they differ significantly in their production methods, sources, and even in the combustion experience.
Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, is a chemical substance primarily obtained through the fermentation of carbohydrates found in raw materials such as cereals, potatoes, or sugarcane. Ethanol production may also involve distillation of the fermented product to increase its concentration, a process known as alcohol distillation, widely used for industrial and commercial ethanol production.
Bioethanol, on the other hand, is a variant of ethanol produced exclusively from renewable sources, such as plant biomass. Bioethanol production relies mainly on cultivating plants with high sugar or starch content, such as sugarcane, corn, sugar beets, or other carbohydrate-rich vegetables. Biomass is then subjected to fermentation and distillation processes to obtain bioethanol.
A notable difference between ethanol and bioethanol is noticeable during combustion. While both fuels emit heat and combustion byproducts, ethanol, especially that derived from petrochemical sources, may have a more pungent and unpleasant odor. In contrast, bioethanol, derived from plant sources, often produces cleaner combustion with a less pronounced and more pleasant odor. This characteristic can make it more suitable for applications in enclosed environments or situations where the odor of combustion is a significant consideration.
It is crucial to emphasize that using ethanol in biofireplaces is strongly discouraged or even prohibited. These devices are specifically designed for the use of bioethanol, which burns more cleanly and safely, reducing the risk of harmful emissions or accidents. The use of ethanol in such devices could compromise safety and the proper functioning of the biofireplace.
