DIY Bubble Wands (2024)

One of my girls’ favorite outdoor activities is blowing bubbles. They’ll blow bubbles for 20 or 30 minutes, chasing them down to pop them and seeing who can blow the biggest bubble. Unfortunately, we sometimes misplace or break the bubble wands that came with the bubble solution.

One day, when we could only find one bubble wand, I decided that we should experiment with some improvised versions. We’ve now experimented with a few DIY versions using items from around the house. Here’s what worked and what didn’t work.

DIY bubble wands from common household items

I’ve scored each version on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 meaning it barely worked and 5 meaning it worked very well.

Drinking straws

We taped 3 drinking straws together and dipped one end of these in the bubble solution. When we blew on the opposite end, we created lots of tiny bubbles!

Score: 5

Plastic water bottles

We cut the bottoms off of a couple of plastic water bottles and dipped these into the bubble solution. When we blew on the lid ends of the water bottles, we were able to create a couple of bubbles.

Score: 1

Small plastic funnels

We dipped the wide ends of the funnels into the bubble solution. When we blew on the narrow ends, we were able to create a few bubbles.

Score: 2

Pipe cleaners

We formed pipe cleaners into the shape of traditional bubble wands (a circle at the end of a stick). We then dipped these in the bubble solution and blew as we would with plastic ones. We were able to make many bubbles.

Score: 4
