DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) is an amphetamine derivative that has been marketed in sports performance and weight loss products, many of which are sold as dietary supplements. DMAA is not a dietary ingredient, and DMAA-containing products marketed as dietary supplements are illegal and their marketing violates the law.

Due to safety concerns, 1,3-DMAA has been removed from military stores in the US. It has also been banned in New Zealand. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers supplements containing 1,3-DMAA to be illegal. Its use has been linked to several reports of serious, life-threatening side effects.

Another drug that has been associated with false positive results for amphetamine is 1,3 dimethylamylamine (DMAA). DMAA has sympathomimetic activity and is an ingredient in some dietary and weight-loss supplements.

The inhibition by DMAA of the conversion of testosterone to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone by rat prostate 5 alpha-reductase is competitive with testosterone, the apparent Ki being 5 nM, and uncompetitive with NADPH, DMAA inhibited both membrane-bound and solubilized 5 alpha-reductase.

It included dimethylamylamine, or DMAA, an amphetamine-like stimulant that the FDA began cracking down on in 2012. The crackdown came after the well-publicized deaths of two soldiers in 2011. The soldiers had taken a pre-workout called Jack3d, and that incident led to increased federal scrutiny of workout supplements.

First off, the FDA proclaims DMAA-containing products as illegal. Also banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), competitive athletes can fail drug tests and jeopardize their careers due to DMAA use.

DMAA is a neurological stimulant which causes a quick spike of energy similar to caffeine and other classical stimulants, but does so by different mechanisms in the brain. It was first introduced as a nasal decongestant as 'Germanium Oil Extract' but more recently is used as a neurological stimulant and party pill.

As for duration of these effects, DMAA is much longer lasting and faster acting than caffeine, yet another reason people love using it. DMAA has a half-life of 8.4 hours compared to just 5.4 hours of caffeine, and a lag time of 0.14 hours vs 0.37 hours for caffeine.

Jack3d was banned in August last year, four months after Squires's death, after concerns over a stimulant called DMAA (dimethylamylamine) found in the powder.

The mean maximum plasma concentration was 76.5 ng/mL and was reached after 3.6 hours. Plasma half-life was 8.4 hours.

'Why was C4 banned? Although DMAA has been prohibited as an ingredient in dietary supplements since 2013, products with DMAA continue to be produced and marketed, so it's important to know what to look out for on labels.

As a result of recent legal action by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, USP Labs, LLC has said to have destroyed all of its DMAA-containing products including, OxyElite Pro with DMAA and Jack3D. However, many of these products, as well as other smaller brands can still be found in stores and online.

At the time of the research, products containing DMAA had been linked to 86 reported health problems and at least five deaths.
