Photographers typically get paid for a photography session after the session has been completed. However, a deposit is standard practice for extended sessions with a larger price tag, such as weddings or events.

Most photographers require payment in full upfront, but many photographers also ask for a deposit of 25-50% then the balance is paid in full at a later agreed-upon date.

For example, they can sell digital or printed images on Etsy or at local markets, license their photos to stock photography sites like Shutterstock, sell photos to magazines and newspapers, and enter photo competitions.

While 15% to 20% tips are standard in certain service sectors, there's no such generally accepted amount for photographers. Some photo sessions can run hundreds of dollars or more, making it impractical to tip at that level. There's also no standard method for actually giving tips.

"For photographers, tips are not required or expected but are generally very much appreciated," says Jenny DeMarco, owner of Jenny DeMarco Photography in Austin, Texas. "Tips should be for the main shooter (even if that is the business owner) and the remaining photography team members.

My rule of thumb for myself and when to start charging money as a new photographer was I would photograph at least 1-2 free sessions per photography category (ie. families, couples, newborns, etc.) before I felt comfortable charging anyone for my services.

Professional photographers can and do pay models when/if they are working through a 3rd party on a specific product in which the photographer is paid (and the model either compensated by the photographer or the 3rd party). Internet models tend to think that paying for photos is unnecessary or completely undesirable.

It is important to always credit your photographer when you use the photos they take. This is more than just good manners, it is required by law. You can include a caption that says "Photo by full name" or "Image courtesy of full name."

Within the contract, it is important to expressly state that a deposit is required from a client to secure a time slot with your studio. This requirement (1) encourages the client's understanding that your time is valuable, and (2) gives your client a financial incentive to show up for the shoot in a timely fashion.
