Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offer Global Entry access? (2024)

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has been a respected traveler’s card for well over a decade, and it’s no surprise that it’s favored by many. In return for a $95 annual fee, you’ll get access to a slew of travel benefits, from points on travel to complimentary trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

But what about if you’re looking for a credit card that will cover your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee? Both government-issued trusted traveler programs are quite popular as they can save you a ton of time when traversing through airports.

While some travel rewards cards do come with this benefit, the Chase Sapphire Preferred does not currently offer reimbursem*nt for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Still, that shouldn’t entirely rule you out from applying for this travel rewards card. Here are the basics of the Global Entry and TSA PreCheck programs and how your Chase Sapphire Preferred Card can come in handy when applying to either one.

Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offer Global Entry?

Unfortunately, the Chase Sapphire Preferred does not offer a Global Entry credit. If you’re looking within the same Chase card family, the higher-tier Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers reimbursem*nt for your Global Entry application fee.

The application fee for Global Entry costs $100. When charging the application fee for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS to the Chase Sapphire Reserve, cardholders will receive one statement credit of up to $100 every four years. Do note, however, that the Chase Sapphire Reserve comes with a steep $550 annual fee — more than 5 times the cost of the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s $95 annual fee.

What are the benefits of Global Entry?

Global Entry is a trusted traveler program managed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Applying requires a$100 nonrefundable fee. However, once you submit your application with the necessary paperwork and complete your interview, you’ll have your Global Entry membership for five years.

When returning to the U.S. from an international trip, Global Entry members get to skip the long customs line and beeline to one of the Global Entry kiosks for expedited processing. Even if you don’t travel internationally often, you may want to consider applying for Global Entry anyway as it also includes TSA PreCheck. At most domestic airports, you’ll get to visit dedicated TSA PreCheck lines for faster security processing, where you’ll get to keep your liquids and laptops in your bag and won’t have to remove your shoes or belts.

While the TSA PreCheck application fee is cheaper ($78), applying to Global Entry makes sense for travelers who anticipate traveling internationally even once during this five-year span. For a difference of $22, Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, allowing you to speed through domestic airport security and skip the long international customs line.

Does the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offer TSA PreCheck?

Unfortunately, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card does not offer TSA PreCheck. However, the application fee for TSA PreCheck is $78 for five years. With an effective cost of around $15 per year, you may find it worthwhile to apply for TSA PreCheck anyway and pay for the application fee with your Chase Sapphire Preferred.

That said, you may also want to consider the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve for TSA PreCheck reimbursem*nt. This luxury travel card offers a statement credit of up to $100 for your choice of Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS every four years.

What are the benefits of TSA Precheck?

TSA PreCheck is available at more than 200 airports across the U.S., granting you access to dedicated security lanes. You’ll also get to keep your belt, jacket and shoes on, and leave your laptop and liquids in your carry-on bag while going through security.

In March 2023, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported that 89% of TSA PreCheck holders got through airport security in less than 5 minutes — making it a great investment for travelers who want to bypass lengthy security lines.

Once you submit your application, conduct a quick, 10-minute in-person interview and are approved for TSA PreCheck, you’ll be assigned a Known Traveler Number (KTN) that you’ll provide during your airline booking.

How taking advantage of the Chase Sapphire Preferred’s welcome bonus can pay for Global Entry

You may still want to consider applying for the affordable travel card. New applicants of the Chase Sapphire Preferred can earn 60,000 points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

With these Ultimate Rewards® points in tow, there’s plenty you can do with them — including getting reimbursed as a statement credit for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. Your Chase Ultimate Rewards points are worth 1 cent apiece when redeeming your points for cash back as a direct deposit into your U.S. checking or savings account, or simply apply your points as a statement credit on your Chase Sapphire Preferred. Therefore, if you charge the $100 Global Entry application fee to your Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can redeem 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points to effectively wipe out this charge.

This is just an example of the many ways to redeem your stash of points. However, note that you can achieve greater value by booking travel through the Chase Travel℠ portal (1.25 cents apiece) or potentially even more by leveraging Chase’s airline and hotel loyalty transfer partners.

What other cards offer Global Entry fee reimbursem*nt?

While the Chase Sapphire Preferred does not offer Global Entry, there are other travel cards to consider — even with a similar $95 annual fee. Here’s a preview of some of the cards that come with Global Entry or TSA PreCheck reimbursem*nt.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

You’ll need to pay a $100 nonrefundable application fee for the Global Entry program every five years. However, there are many ways to offset the cost, such as by holding a travel card that reimburses Global Entry application fees. Even if you have a rewards card that doesn’t offer free Global Entry (for example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred), you can also redeem your points as a statement credit for the application fee.

Global Entry is well-worth the sticker price. Although you’ll pay a $100 application fee, your Global Entry membership is valid for five years, netting the cost per year to just $20. With dedicated Global Entry kiosks when arriving at a U.S. airport from an international country, you can skip the long customs line and be on your way shortly.
