Virtual RAM has now become ubiquitous in smartphones. After being present in PCs for years, the technology is being used by smartphone brands to make their products, especially in the entry-level and budget segments, more compelling to customers who treat the amount of RAM as a key factor in making the purchase decision. While most brands are restricted to offering as low as 3GB or 4GB RAM in smartphones priced under Rs 10,000, adding another 4GB of virtual RAM — effectively marketing the product as having “4GB+4GB RAM” — gives an impression that the handset is more capable than before. But adding 4GB virtual RAM over 4GB physical RAM is not the same as having 8GB RAM in a mobile phone. At best, the marketing gimmick is good for keeping more apps running in the background, but has little impact in improving the overall performance of the phone or running heaving apps.

How does RAM work?

RAM, or random access memory, is a high-speed storage that stores data on a temporary basis, unlike the internal storage where data is stored permanently till its deleted or overwritten manually. RAM is called volatile memory because of its temporary nature, but is much faster than other types of memory such as hard drives. RAM is used to store data that a computer is working on at time, including the operating system, open applications or the data that is being processed. As a result, using too many applications and processes simultaneously overloads the RAM, leading to the handset slowing down or crashing.

What is virtual RAM?

Virtual RAM is a feature on some Android smartphones that uses a portion of the device’s internal storage to temporarily act as additional RAM. It refers to RAM that is not physically present on your device, but is called to action when needed. Virtual RAM is called by different names by brands, such as RAM Plus (Samsung), Dynamic RAM Expansion (Realme), Memory Fusion (Tecno), RAM Expansion (Oppo) and simply Virtual RAM (Vivo). The technology, though, does the same thing: borrow memory from internal storage to provide extra RAM when needed. But before you can understand if this can have any tangible benefit in using a smartphone, here’s a quick refresher on how memory management works on Android.

Memory management on Android

Android works on the premise that free memory is wasted memory, and tries to use all of the available memory at all times, resulting in apps being stored in memory long after they have been closed by the user. As a result, an Android smartphone will often have very little free memory. The amount of used RAM is determined by the number of apps open on the device. Now, applications on Android are processed in two ways by RAM. Some, like the Facebook app, do not need refreshing when they are in the background, so they remain static in RAM. Some others, like Spotify, keep running even when the app is removed from the foreground, using RAM dynamically to scale up or down depending on the activity. These dynamic operations are delegated to a partition in the memory which Google calls zRAM, where the app is compressed so that it does not overload the phone.

How is Virtual RAM beneficial?

As budget smartphones already have less amount of RAM to work with (most come with 4GB RAM), virtual RAM is deployed by creating a zRAM partition out of the internal storage, so as to expand the memory capability in storing more of such dynamic apps. As a result, budget phones become more capable in running more apps on the device, especially those which get refreshed or updated in the background. With a recent rise in processor-intensive applications and games in smartphones, one way to manage the load is installing more physical RAM in smartphones, but that has added costs. So Virtual RAM became a means for brands to make budget smartphones more capable. But is it really safe in the long run?

Is Virtual RAM a good thing? What no one will tell you about it?

For one, using the storage as RAM is not really beneficial as the natures of the two components are different. While RAM is non-volatile storage where any byte of memory can be accessed directly without having to read the preceding bytes, hard drives store data sequentially and must be read from the beginning to reach a specific location. Further, RAMs operate at much higher speeds as compared to storage memory. While this means virtual RAM may not work as fast as normal RAM, more importantly, it may reduce the life span of the internal storage as it is not meant for frequent read-write operations required to function as RAM.

Here’s what Google highlights on the Android Developer Page: “On Android, storage isn’t used for swap space like it is on other Linux implementations since frequent writing can cause wear on this memory and shorten the life of the storage medium.”

FAQs

Does Virtual RAM really make your smartphone more capable? - ET Telecom? ›

Virtual RAM, now ubiquitous in smartphones, may help keep more apps running in the background, but is not the same as having extra RAM in the handset.

Does virtual RAM really make your smartphone more capable? ›

It wont make a single piece of difference. Virtual RAM isn't a RAM either, it is just a simple HDD space that is being used from the storage to make the OS look like it has more RAM. This in return will consume more of the actual available system level RAM(from the 8GB pool). This will increase RAM consumption.

Does phone RAM expansion really work? ›

RAM expansion does more harm than good. Phones with 8+ GB of actual RAM will still have more than half the RAM used by Android/Oxygen OS to make switching between apps smoother and cache apps so they don't restart. This in itself works better with actual RAM instead of RAM expansion.

What is the disadvantage of virtual RAM in Android? ›

Slower speed than physical memory

In short, applications take longer to execute in virtual memory, thanks to page swapping.

Does increasing virtual RAM help? ›

Virtual memory is important for improving system performance, multitasking and using large programs. However, users should not overly rely on virtual memory, since it is considerably slower than RAM.

Is virtual RAM real or fake? ›

Virtual RAM is a feature on some Android smartphones that uses a portion of the device's internal storage to temporarily act as additional RAM. It refers to RAM that is not physically present on your device, but is called to action when needed.

How much virtual RAM should I add? ›

Microsoft recommends that you set virtual memory to be no less than 1.5 times and no more than 3 times the amount of RAM on your computer.

Does virtual RAM expansion consume more battery? ›

Ram plus is virtual memory from the storage and cpu. It doesn't affect battery life that extremely.

Should I turn off virtual RAM? ›

If you don't have enough RAM on your PC, disabling it might increase the frequency of memory-related errors, but at least you might increase your SSD's life span because that's one less file being written on it. Personally, I don't see the need to disable it.

Does increasing RAM increase phone speed? ›

The more RAM your smartphone has the quicker you can access and switch between apps without experiencing any lag. Without RAM, apps would close when you switch to another app, causing delays and slowing your phone down.

Why using virtual memory is not as effective as adding more RAM? ›

Using virtual memory makes a computer run slower, as the processor has to wait while data is swapped between hard disk and RAM. As secondary storage devices have slower access times than RAM, the computer's processing performance can be severely impaired.

Is virtual RAM safe? ›

The available storage space constrains the amount of virtual RAM your device can utilise. Unlike physical RAM, which is specifically designed for rapid data access, storage memory is optimised for long-term data storage, not quick retrieval. Thus, relying too heavily on virtual RAM can lead to storage bottlenecks.

Is virtual RAM usable? ›

Virtual RAM is a temporary storage space used by Windows to store files from your RAM that are not required for the task at hand in case your RAM gets filled up to free up space in your memory. This is an ongoing process in the background. But it will definitely slow down your system considerably.

Does virtual RAM slow down a phone? ›

Further, RAMs operate at much higher speeds as compared to storage memory. While this means virtual RAM may not work as fast as normal RAM, more importantly, it may reduce the life span of the internal storage as it is not meant for frequent read-write operations required to function as RAM.

Does RAM expansion really work on Android? ›

This feature does not help any application's performance, but it will assist in keeping more apps open however. In the three sample phones we tried RAM expansion, we noticed that RAM scores are a little bit higher when RAM expansion is OFF.

What should my virtual memory be set at 16GB RAM? ›

However, with advancements in technology and more efficient operating systems, this rule is not as rigid as it once was. For a system with 16GB RAM, setting the virtual memory between 24GB to 32GB is a good starting point, but adjustments might be needed based on specific use cases.

Does more RAM make your phone faster? ›

The more RAM your phone has, the more information it can store in this fast-access memory, enabling it to keep more apps running in the background without slowing down.

Does increasing virtual RAM drain battery? ›

This is false. Ram plus is virtual memory from the storage and cpu. It doesn't affect battery life that extremely. I Disabling vs enabling may prolong an extra 5 minutes-- that's it.

Can smartphone RAM be increased? ›

Increasing RAM on an Android device (phone or tablet) is generally not possible in the same way you might upgrade RAM on a desktop computer. RAM (Random Access Memory) in mobile devices is soldered onto the device's motherboard and is not designed to be replaced or upgraded by the user.
