Scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder have uncovered a disturbing truth: female common dolphins are living an average of seven years less than they did just a few decades ago. While dolphins are not the intended targets, they often fall victim to fishing operations, a phenomenon known as "bycatch." This accidental killing of dolphins has reached alarming proportions, with an estimated 6,900 dolphins perishing in 2021 alone, out of a winter population of 180,000 in the Bay of Biscay. Despite these staggering numbers, past surveys suggested that dolphin populations in the area were stable, leading to a critical oversight.

A New Approach to Monitoring Decline

Traditional monitoring methods, which rely on counting dolphins from ships or aircraft, can miss subtle population changes until they become severe. This delay can be devastating for species like dolphins, which reproduce slowly and have long lifespans. To address this issue, the research team took a novel approach by studying stranded dolphins that had washed ashore along the Bay of Biscay.

Dolphins beach themselves when they are sick, injured, or disoriented, and unfortunately, most do not survive. While stranded animals represent only a small fraction of total deaths, their condition over time provides valuable insights into the overall health of the population. The team analyzed an extensive dataset of 759 stranded common dolphins collected between 1997 and 2019.

"By examining changes in survival and fertility rates, we can identify problems before they become irreversible," Rouby explained. "These sensitive indicators allow us to track the population's health more accurately."

Unveiling the Evidence in Dolphin Teeth

By studying the growth layers in dolphin teeth, the scientists were able to determine the ages at which the animals died. Their findings were startling: the average lifespan of female dolphins in the Bay of Biscay had plummeted from a healthy 24 years in the late 1990s to a mere 17 years by 2019. This dramatic decrease has also led to a decline in calf births, signaling a broader reproductive crisis.

The study revealed that population growth has slowed by a significant 2.4% since 1997. Under ideal conditions, common dolphin numbers can increase by approximately 4% per year, but in 2019, growth was likely only around 1.6%. Rouby cautioned that the reality could be even grimmer, and if this trend continues, growth may eventually turn negative, marking the beginning of an overall population decline.

Policy Changes and a Call to Action

In a bid to protect dolphins, the French government implemented an annual one-month fishing ban in the Bay of Biscay starting in January 2024. While initial reports suggest this measure may be making a difference, Rouby proposed an adjustment to the timing of the ban based on dolphin migration patterns. By aligning the closure with the dolphins' movements, protection could be maximized, as dolphins do not always arrive at the same time each year.

Other North Atlantic cetaceans, such as harbor porpoises and bottlenose dolphins, may also be facing similar pressures. Understanding these patterns is crucial for strengthening marine protection policies like the US Marine Mammal Protection Act and the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive.

The Importance of Dolphins in the Ecosystem

"Dolphins are the top predators in the Bay of Biscay, and their presence is vital for maintaining the ecosystem's balance," Rouby emphasized. "Without these predators, fish populations could spiral out of control, leading to excessive consumption of plankton and vegetation, ultimately causing the system to collapse."

He urged swift and informed action, emphasizing the responsibility humans have to protect both living and non-living elements of our environment. "Facing the evidence of viability loss, we must act now, before it's too late."

This alarming trend serves as a stark reminder of the delicate interconnectedness of our planet's ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and the world they inhabit.
