Elder Scrolls 6: Powered by Creation Engine 3 - Everything We Know So Far (2026)

The Elder Scrolls 6: A Return to the Classics

Bethesda's creative director, Todd Howard, has revealed exciting news for fans of the iconic Elder Scrolls series. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a return to the beloved open-world RPGs that the studio is renowned for. But here's the twist: it will be powered by an enhanced version of Bethesda's Creation Engine, marking a significant evolution in the franchise.

During the February 18th interview livestream, Howard openly discussed the studio's creative journey. He admitted that Starfield and Fallout 76, while innovative, took a different approach from the classic Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. However, with Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda is going back to what fans love and expect.

"Fallout 76 and Starfield are creative detours from the classic style of Elder Scrolls and Fallout," Howard explained. "But with Elder Scrolls 6, we're returning to the familiar and beloved classic style that we know and excel at."

Howard emphasized the importance of innovation within the familiar. He believes there's still room for creativity and improvement in the series, ensuring that players will feel like they're experiencing the game for the first time. "We have a style that people expect from us, and there's still a lot of innovation to be done. When you step into the world, it should feel like a fresh and exciting adventure."

The development of Elder Scrolls 6 has been a long-awaited journey, announced over six years ago. Howard hinted at the progress made, mentioning a significant milestone and smooth development. However, he also noted that the game is still a work in progress and will take some time to complete. "We're on track and making great progress, but it's going to be a while before we finish this masterpiece."

In addition to the game's development, Howard mentioned the studio's efforts in updating its internal engine. They've been working tirelessly to upgrade Creation Engine 2, which powers Starfield, to Creation Engine 3, which will power Elder Scrolls 6 and future Bethesda games. This engine update aims to enhance the capabilities and possibilities for future games.

As fans eagerly await the release of Elder Scrolls 6, they can expect a return to the immersive, open-world RPGs that have defined the series. With a focus on innovation within the classic style, Bethesda promises an exciting adventure that will keep players engaged and eager for more.
