Ethiopia is taking a bold step towards energy independence and sustainable transportation with a groundbreaking biofuel initiative. The country aims to revolutionize its aviation and transport sectors, and this is where it gets exciting!
A massive 23,000-hectare agricultural biorefinery is being developed through a strategic partnership, with a focus on producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), biofuels for households, and ethanol for transport. This project is a game-changer, targeting a 10% SAF blend in aviation fuel and significantly reducing the country's reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
But here's the twist: while promoting biofuels, Ethiopia is also pushing for a broader energy transition. By 2030, the country aims to have a substantial number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads, with over 115,000 EVs already registered. Additionally, the government is ramping up liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and encouraging the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in buses and vehicles, targeting one million CNG-powered vehicles by 2027.
The biorefinery project is expected to produce an impressive 530,000 million litres of SAF annually by 2028-2030, while also supplying 120-150 million litres of clean cooking fuel per year, replacing traditional fuels like kerosene and charcoal. Transport ethanol blends will range from E10 to E20, with an expected annual production of 115-230 million litres.
What makes this initiative even more remarkable is its focus on local resources and rural development. The project will utilize locally produced feedstocks such as cassava and sugarcane, boosting rural employment and domestic agriculture. Sunbird Bioenergy Africa and Ethiopian Mining Corporation (EMC) are joining forces, with Sunbird managing renewable fuel production and EMC providing industrial know-how and infrastructure support.
Richard Bennett, the visionary behind Sunbird Bioenergy Africa, believes Ethiopia's existing biofuel policies and the World Bank's financial exploration are key enablers for the project's success. He ambitiously aims to replace a significant chunk of Ethiopia's fuel needs with biofuel. Meanwhile, Tewodros Getachew, CEO of EMC, revealed that the biorefinery is projected to produce 40-60 million litres annually and will supply jet fuel for Ethiopian Airlines.
