Is the Wise card worth it? ›

Don't Expect to Get Too Far Without Cash

There's a lot that you can buy with a credit card in Europe, so bring at least one. But don't expect to get very far without a little cash, too—especially if you're a tourist. Transportation services, such as taxis and buses, often require local currency.

The card linked to your Wise account, just like a bank debit card is linked to a current account. Using your card, you can spend whatever is in your Wise balance. So all you need to do before you travel is top up your Wise account with the money you expect to spend while you're away.

One of the biggest downsides with the Wise card is that you'll have limited free ATM withdrawals. For all accounts, you'll have 2 free ATM withdrawals each month, after which you will be charged an ATM usage fee and a percentage markup on the amount of cash you withdraw.

Add money to your Wise account

To pay with your card, you'll need money in your Wise account. Add money by opening the Wise app, choosing the currency you want to add money to, and how much you'd like to add. Then, choose to pay using different payment methods such as bank transfer or card.

Cash or card? Minimise the risk of being stuck without money overseas by taking a mix of both cash and cards. That way you're covered should you lose one, or if you come across places that don't accept cards. Credit cards offer extra protection.
