On DigiCert's page, they advertise a 2048 bit SSL with a 256 bit encryption: http://www.digicert.com/256-bit-ssl-certificates.htm

What exactly is the difference here and why are two encryption bits being referenced?

Answered by Anisha Dalal

From Digicert: https://www.digicert.com/ssl-cryptography.htm

"Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) uses a hybrid cryptosystem and benefits from using both types of" "(Asymmetric and Symmetric) encryption."
"Asymmetric encryption (or public-key cryptography) uses a separate key for encryption and decryption."
"Symmetric encryption (or pre-shared key encryption) uses a single key to both encrypt and decrypt data."
"Public-key cryptography (asymmetric) uses encryption algorithms like RSA to create the public and private keys." "RSA is based on the presumed difficulty of factoring large integers." "keys smaller than 2048 bits are no longer considered safe to use"; "would take an average computer more than 14 billion years to crack."
"Symmetric key sizes are typically 128 or 256 bits." "a 128-bit key has 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 encryption code possibilities"; "would take quite a bit of time to break a 128-bit key."

Summary:The 2048 bit encryption refers to the Asymmetric encryption offered by Digicert to transfer the 256-bit Symmetric key to facilitate the data exchange (secure communication) between the client & server (via SSL/TLS).

FAQs

What is 2048 bit encryption? ›

2048-bit encryption refers to the size of an SSL certificate. SSL stands for secure sockets layer and is the way secure connections are created between your web browser and a website. The advantage of 2048-bit encryption is strength, although it is less than that of a true 2048-bit key.

How does RSA 2048 work? ›

RSA-2048 is a type of asymmetric cryptographic algorithm called RSA that uses a 2048-bit key size. The key size determines how difficult it is to break the encryption - the larger the key, the more computationally difficult it is to decrypt the ciphertext without the key.

What is the bit security of RSA 2048? ›

A 2048-bit RSA key provides 112-bit of security. Given that TLS certificates are valid for a maximum of one year, 2048-bit RSA key length fulfills the NIST recommendation until late in this decade.

Is RSA 2048 still safe? ›

According to the recommendation of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the smallest RSA key size that can be considered secure is 2,048 bits. This means approximately 600 digits, but in many cases larger keys of 3,072 or 4,096 bits are also used.

What is so special about 2048? ›

The power of prediction: "The brain loves to make predictions," Willis says. "In 2048, every 2 or 4 that you move is a prediction—you're not sure it's the best thing to do—and the game offers limitless chances to make another prediction."

How does bit encryption work? ›

Bit encryption refers to the secret key size used in the encryption process. More bits mean more possible combinations, enhancing security. 256-bit encryption, thus, creates numerous potential combinations, making it nearly impossible to decrypt.

How does 2048 work? ›

The objective of the game is to combine tiles of the same number to eventually form the number 2048. The user can move in the four cardinal directions and after every move a new tile is generated randomly in the grid which is either numbered 2 or 4 with a probability of about . 10.

What is the secret to 2048? ›

Try to keep your tiles in a snake-like pattern, which will help you keep the largest tile in one of the corners. Always try to move tiles towards the edges and corners. This prevents smaller tiles from blocking the larger ones. Think several moves ahead.

How to generate 2048-bit certificate? ›

How to generate a 2048-bit key and CSR for S/MIME in OpenSSL
  1. Download and install OpenSSL for windows. ...
  2. Run openssl.exe in the command prompt. ...
  3. Fill in the following details: ...
  4. Open the CSR file in TXT Editor like Notepad or Word pad.
  5. Include the test into your order.
  6. Download the Primary CS cert and its intermediate.

How much information can you encrypt with RSA 2048? ›

RSA is only able to encrypt data to a maximum amount equal to your key size (2048 bits = 256 bytes), minus any padding and header data (11 bytes for PKCS#1 v1. 5 padding).

How many characters are in a 2048-bit RSA key? ›

RSA-2048 has 617 decimal digits (2,048 bits).

What does RSA 2048 mean? ›

RSA-2048 is a type of asymmetric cryptographic algorithm called RSA that uses a 2048-bit key size. The key size determines how difficult it is to break the encryption - the larger the key, the more computationally difficult it is to decrypt the ciphertext without the key.

How long will RSA 2048 last? ›

The difference between RSA 2048 and RSA 4096 lies in their bit length, with RSA 2048 being 2048 bits long and RSA 4096 doubling that at 4096 bits, offering enhanced security at the cost of increased processing time. NIST deems RSA 2048 sufficient until 2030, balancing security strength and computational efficiency.

How to generate RSA 2048 key? ›

We recommend using OpenSSL to generate a 2048-bit RSA key pair.
  1. Generate a private key and a public key in PEM. You should safeguard the private key and never share it, not even with Auth0: ...
  2. Extract the public key in PEM format using the following command. ...
  3. Save the PEM file.

How long does it take to break 2048 bit encryption? ›

So, even with the assumed computational capacity of Google's data centers, it would take approximately 19.8 quadrillion years to crack RSA-2048 using brute force. This is an astronomical time frame, far longer than the current age of the universe (which is about 13.8 billion years).

What is the difference between 1024 and 2048 bit encryption? ›

One of those stronger encryption methods is the 2048-bit DKIM key. Now, as the name suggests, the primary difference between 1024-bit and 2048-bit keys is the length – 2048 is double that of a standard key.

Which is better, RSA 2048 or 4096? ›

A 4096 bit key does provide a reasonable increase in strength over a 2048 bit key, and according to the GNFS complexity, encryption strength doesn't drop off after 2048 bits. There's a significant increase in CPU usage for the brief time of handshaking as a result of a 4096 bit key.

Is an SSL certificate 1024 or 2048 bit? ›

New SSL certificates with 1024-bit keys are no longer issued by Certificate Authorities and it is also not possible to activate a certificate using a 1024-bit key CSR at Namecheap. According to new industry standards, the minimum key size which is accepted by our system is 2048 bits.
