Bodie Island Lighthouse
Located just south of Whale Bone Junction, the Bodie Island Lighthouse in Nags Head, NC is a beloved attraction to visit during your time on the Outer Banks. This historic site was originally built in the 1870s and is now under the management of the National Parks Service. In fact, it’s been remodeled several times to ensure that visitors can keep visiting. Enjoy a tour of the interior and casual stroll of the grounds where you can easily bird watching and sightseeing!

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, NC, on Hatteras Island is one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world. It’s known for its iconic black-and-white stripes and towering 208-feet height. The beam of light from this site travels 20 miles into the ocean and was formerly used to help ships navigate the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” A little-known fact – the lighthouse was the biggest brick structure to ever be moved in history as it had to be relocated due to beach erosion in 1999. Enjoy the seasonal hours from Easter to Thanksgiving!
Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Located in Corolla, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse still functions as an active lighthouse. The light can be seen for 18 nautical miles and rotates every 20 seconds. Known for its red brick exterior, the lighthouse was never painted to ensure that captains could see the structure at sea. Over the past couple of decades, restoration has occurred. The grounds are open year-round, while the lighthouse is open seasonally.
Ocraco*ke Island Lighthouse
The oldest North Carolina lighthouse in operation and the second oldest in the United States, the Ocraco*ke Light serves an important role. It’s a popular destination and remains a landmark attraction in the Ocraco*ke Village. Enjoy a walking or biking tour around the lighthouse as it is not open for visitors to go inside. It’s well worth the visit!
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
Located in downtown Manteo, the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is located 40 yards from the Roanoke Sound. It maintains the classic charm of the Outer Banks that visitors can enjoy while walking on the boardwalk. Although the lighthouse is only 10 years old, its design is a combination of several lighthouses in the area.
