So what happens to a simulacrum when its caster dies? I assume it becomes free willed. Does it know its a simulacrum?

I'm unaware of any rules regarding this.
I think it would be ok to treat it as a Homunculus, which is somewhat similar, if you need a quick solution.

If you are old enough to have read the Gord the Rogue novels, Eclavdra made a simulacrum of herself that became free willed (and Gord's love interest).
I actually have those books but haven't read them since the 80's. I'm not sure if Eclavdra was dead when this occurred.
No idea if there is any official ruling on this, but apparently a simulacrum becoming a "real girl" was okay with Gary Gygax.
And I'm pretty sure she knew she was a simulacrum.

According to the spell description:

At all times, the simulacrum remains under your absolute command. No special telepathic link exists, so command must be exercised in some other manner. A simulacrum has no ability to become more powerful. It cannot increase its level or abilities. If reduced to 0 hit points or otherwise destroyed, it reverts to snow and melts instantly into nothingness. A complex process requiring at least 24 hours, 100 gp per hit point, and a fully equipped magical laboratory can repair damage to a simulacrum.
So, the answer seems to be "no." A simulacrum will continue to function and pursue any previous orders, which can be complex and/or long-term, but does not become "free willed."
@sunbeam: That was a variant clone, not a simulacrum. Clones are free-willed on creation.

I miss those books. They were some of the most entertaining D&D books written. A child 'abandoned' by his parents who eventually found his only life on the streets. To treasure hunter and adventurer to the Champion of Balance against an EVIL even gods, devils and demons feared. (Sounds like the guy the four horsem*n have changed up in some aspects.)
