Why the 2025/26 Season Could Mark a DefCon Defender Points Boom in FPL

Defensive contribution (DefCon) points are taking center stage in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, and it's an exciting development for managers.
In the 2025/26 season so far, eight out of the top ten scoring defenders have already accumulated at least six DefCon points. This trend is even more impressive when compared to the previous season, where only a few defenders reached this milestone.
Midfielders are also making significant strides in DefCon points. Most leading midfielders have hit the 'DC' threshold at least once, indicating a broader shift in strategy and performance.
Our initial research focused on analyzing underlying defensive numbers from the 2024/25 season. Players like James Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Moises Caicedo (£5.9m) stood out as potential beneficiaries, and they've certainly lived up to the hype in the first eight Gameweeks.
However, it seems DefCon points might be even more significant than initially anticipated. Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.4m) has already surpassed his DefCon points from the previous season, and the number of defenders consistently hitting the DefCon threshold in 50% or more matches has increased.
To further explore this trend, we delved into the Members Area (https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/defenders/defending/) and analyzed the data for the past eight seasons, as far back as our records go.
From 2018/19 to 2024/25, we converted underlying defensive data into tangible FPL points. For the 2025/26 season, we're using the actual FPL points for DefCon and projecting them to the end of the campaign based on the current rate of returns after eight Gameweeks (338 for defenders, 202 for midfielders).
The results are fascinating, and they suggest that the 2025/26 season could be a game-changer for DefCon points in FPL.
