A. Geographical Location and its Climate
Hormozgan Province is one of the seven coastal provinces of Iran with the area of 70712.06 km2 and it is stretched to the northern part of Hormoz Strait. It almost covers 4.1 percent of Iran area. Hormozgan's neighboring provinces are Sistan and Baluchestan, Kerman, Fars, and Booshehr.
The southern border of the province has 900 kilometers coastlines extended to Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Taking into account the 600 km coastline of the 14 islands which belong to this province, this coastline reaches more than 1,500 km. Thanks to its strategic position, this province has a top status in Iran and it requires special attention to be given in its coastal management. It also necessitates the allocation of needful resources that lead to a dynamic management of the province.
Hormozgan province possesses 14 multi purposes islands. Most of the islands in Persian Gulf belong to this province and may have various functions such as trade, tourism, fishery, and many other functions. Qeshm with 14912 km2 is the largest island in Persian Gulf.
Hormozgan can generally be divided into four areas:
- Mountainous areas which comprise two-third of the province.
- Fields which are stretched between the mountains and coastal areas.
- Plains that are scattered in the coastlines (Minab and Bandar Abbas)
- Islands which in turn are divided into three types: coral islands (Abu Musa and Kish), islands consisting of salt hills (Hormoz) and islands consisting of rugged lands.
Based on geographical conditions, Hormozgan climate is divided into two types of desert and semi-desert. As these desert areas are exposed to the sea proximity and high temperature, their climate is hot and humid. In other areas, like central deserts of Iran, the weather is hot and humid but the weather at higher altitudes is more moderate and milder.
During the past year the average of rain fall in Hormozgan was about 151 mm.
B. State Divisions:
- Hormozgan province has got 13 major cities, 38 smaller cities, 38 districts, 85 villages and 1732 settlements with small or large number of population. Cultural and economic activities of the province are highly depended on and influenced by the sea. For example, 80% of the city population and 60% of its whole population inhabit in the 20 km vicinity of the sea.
- With 14 islands, Hormozgan has the highest number of islands among the coastal provinces.
- Two major cities, Abu Musa and Qeshm, are islands and separate from the main province.
- Among 38 cities of the province 14 of them are coastal cities.
C- Population
- The population of the province in 2016 was recorded as being 1,776,415 which is 2.2% of Iran population. The population growth from 2011 to 2016 has been 2.39. This population is comprised of 55% urban and 45% rural population.
- Due to its various climatic, geographic, social, cultural, and economic conditions, the population distribution is not consistent. Most of the population inhabits in Bandar Abbas with 37% of the whole population, 39% of it are in Bandar Lengeh, Qeshm, Minab, and Roodan and the remaining 24% live in 8 other cities.
- The rate of population distribution is 25.12 per km2.
D- Tourist Attractions
- Diverse eco-tourism and mangrove forests have created unique environment to develop excursion and tourism industry in the province.
- The number of historical sites registered in the national heritage list is 9.
- Several thermal springs such as Genow spring and facilities for water therapy
- Tourists' centers and excursion complexes approved and ratified by the board of ministers.
- 17 hotels with 2300 beds and 10 inns and lodging-houses and hotel apartments with 400 beds.
