“But the wisdom from above is first pure [morally and spiritually undefiled], then peace-loving [courteous, considerate], gentle, reasonable [and willing to listen], full of compassion and good fruits. It is unwavering, without [self-righteous] hypocrisy [and self-serving guile].” [James 3:17 AMP]
In this chapter, James describes the wisdom of the world in contrast to Godly wisdom. From yesterday’s devotional, we studied that the wisdom of God is peaceful and that peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God in a situation. The wisdom of God is also pure and gentle.
Typically, human beings are driven by envy and selfish ambition and the result is the disorder and evil we see in our world today. Having the wisdom of God means trusting God to provide all that we need when we need it.
James describes the wisdom of God as pure. The Greek word translated as pure is “hagnē” which means undivided, pure or chaste. This implies that God’s wisdom is refined and focused solely on what God has called us to do.
The wisdom of God is also gentle. It is considerate and always ready to serve rather than ready to fight. The wisdom of God makes us reasonable and willing to see things from God’s point of view. It also makes us willing to do things God’s way.
As believers, once we submit to the Lord in faith, we have access to the generous wealth of wisdom that is found in Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for making Your wealth of wisdom available to us for our use. I pray that the gentility and genuineness of Your wisdom will be seen in what we say or do today and always. Amen
