Gold Fingers | Bay Area Circuits (2024)

Gold Fingers are gold plated connectors on one edge of a printed circuit board.

A few of the qualities of the gold fingers include:

They must be hard in order to allow the circuit board to be inserted into a connector.
They should also be very smooth and flat to allow for easy insertion.
They are an excellent conductor which makes the connection much better.

How are PCBs with Gold Fingers used?

In a computer you have a number of different peripheral devices that need to be connected to the mother board. Examples include:

Video and Graphics Card
Network Adaptor Card
Audio Adaptor Card
TV or Other Specialty Adaptor Card

In industrial applications you will see similar uses. For example, in the “oil and well” industry there are many CPU devices and well locations. Those CPU devices will be connected wirelessly to a network to transfer data. The CPU will contain many open slots for connecting various devices and the well location. Each of those devices requires a circuit board with gold finger connectors that will be inserted into the CPU.

Process and Specifications

An electrolytic process is used that includes hardeners and is plated over nickel.

Typically, the gold used is 98% pure, 24-carat gold.

The nickel is 150 to 200 micro inches thick.

The gold that is plated is 30 to 50 micro inches thick.

The gold is plated on the top and bottom of the board.

If the boards will be in an array, it is recommended that the fingers be placed at the outside edges of the array to allow for the gold plating process.

How much gold is in a circuit? ›

Among these metals, gold is a high-value material, and it is estimated that one ton of circuit boards contains about 150 grams of gold, compared to only 5 grams of gold in one ton of gold ore.

Are the pins on circuit boards gold? ›

The contact points or pins of the computer is gold plate.

How do you remove gold from PCB? ›

Pour nitric acid into the glass container over the circuit boards. Stir the mixture with the glass or metal rod until the contents become a uniform fluid. Once the gold has separated from the plates — it may take some time — strain the nitric acid from the mix using the filter. Take out the pieces that aren't melted.

What is a gold finger? ›

What is Gold Finger? Gold fingers are the gold-plated connectors at the edge of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Shaped like a finger, they serve as connectors that connect the PCB to a motherboard, making sure a signal or command is reliably transmitted.

What is the gold content of PCB? ›

The same Indian study used atomic absorption spectroscopy sampling to determine that gold content in PCBs is “in the range of 0.009 to 0.017 percent” by weight, while the silver content weighed in at between 0.25 and 0.79 percent.

What material is gold fingers made of? ›

They are commonly made of metallic materials such as gold or upgraded gold alloys . Since the surface of the pads is gold-plated and the conductive contacts are arranged like fingers, they are called "gold fingers".

What is the finger protocol? ›

Finger is a protocol used to look up user information on a host, often providing details like login status, email addresses, and full names. It has applications in Unix, Windows, and various browsers and tools.

What is the meaning of gold standard technique? ›

In medicine and medical statistics, the gold standard, criterion standard, or reference standard is the diagnostic test or benchmark that is the best available under reasonable conditions. It is the test against which new tests are compared to gauge their validity, and it is used to evaluate the efficacy of treatments.

What is 6 finger technique? ›

At UCMAS, kids learn the 6-Finger Technique for mental math. They use the 3 fingers of each hand to move beads on the abacus in specific ways to solve math problems quickly and accurately. This practice not only boosts math skills but also activates parts of the brain linked to numbers, memory, and problem-solving.
