What is the hardship allowance payment? ›

Hardship payments are typically provided to individuals who are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to meet their basic needs. They are intended to help individuals get through a period of hardship.

Hardship duty pay is additional compensation paid to service members assigned to locations where living conditions are substantially below those conditions in the continental U.S. (CONUS).

Depending on your situation, you might submit documents such as an unemployment notice, medical bills, military orders or a divorce decree. It's also helpful to provide verification of all sources of income (paystubs, W-2s and 1099s) as well as account statements to show your current financial status.

To make a 401(k) hardship withdrawal, you will need to contact your employer and plan administrator and request the withdrawal. The administrator will likely require you to provide evidence of the hardship, such as medical bills or a notice of eviction.

This is roughly 60 per cent of the amount of the sanction. The amount of the Hardship Payment you get is the daily rate multiplied by the number of days the sanction lasts. A Hardship Payment is only paid for a limited number of days.
