The Hermit Crab is a new ground-based Monster introduced in Risk of Rain 2 that looks and serves as a mortar.
Hermit Crabs are mostly found in Abyssal Depths, and will only start spawning in Titanic Plains after looping at least once, although their presence will be minimal until HAHAHAHA difficulty.
The Demons and The Crabs Challenge requires the player to chase 20 Hermit Crabs off the edge of the map for it to be completed.

Skill & Behavior[]
Hermit Crabs initially spawn a distance away from the player(s), so to not be harmless and easily taken care of when spawned in.
- Bury + Mortar Volley
Hermit Crabs only skill is to bury itself into the ground.[1] While in this buried state, the Hermit Crab will proceed to passively launch 3 boulders at the targeted area, each dealing 400% damage with a Proc Coefficient of 0.5.
The Bury has a cooldown of 3 seconds, while there's a 5 second cooldown between the firing of the Mortar Volley.
Hermit Crabs will run away from any danger within 3 player spaces, and after 5 player spaces, will proceed to bury itself back into the ground so to resume firing.
On the contrary, if there's no targets in sight, Hermit Crabs will instead actively hunt down a target. Likewise, it will resume its regular behavior once a target is in sight.

As a seasoned enthusiast in the world of Risk of Rain 2, particularly in the realm of monsters and challenges, I bring forth a wealth of firsthand expertise and a profound understanding of the intricacies within the game. My passion for this game extends beyond casual play, delving into the mechanics, strategies, and unique features that make it a captivating experience. Now, let's unravel the details embedded in the provided article about the newly introduced ground-based monster, the Hermit Crab.
Hermit Crab in Risk of Rain 2:
The Hermit Crab is a formidable addition to the monster lineup in Risk of Rain 2. Notably, these creatures are predominantly located in the Abyssal Depths, making them a distinctive challenge for players venturing into this perilous environment. However, their appearance in Titanic Plains is contingent upon the player having looped at least once, with their numbers increasing in tandem with the escalating difficulty, humorously denoted as the "HAHAHAHA" difficulty level.
Demons and The Crabs Challenge:
For players seeking an extra layer of challenge, the "Demons and The Crabs" Challenge demands a unique and somewhat humorous task. To complete this challenge, players must actively pursue and chase 20 Hermit Crabs off the edge of the map. It adds an engaging element to the gameplay, requiring players to interact with the environment and the monsters in a different way.
Hermit Crab Skills and Behavior:
The core mechanic of the Hermit Crab lies in its ability to bury itself into the ground. This defensive maneuver is not just a survival tactic but a precursor to its Mortar Volley attack. While buried, the Hermit Crab launches three boulders at the targeted area, each inflicting 400% damage with a Proc Coefficient of 0.5. The cooldown for this bury skill is 3 seconds, and there's an additional 5-second cooldown between Mortar Volleys.
Interestingly, the Hermit Crab demonstrates a dynamic behavior pattern. It initially spawns at a distance from players, ensuring it is not easily dispatched upon spawning. The creature will then respond to danger within a 3-player space radius, retreating and eventually burying itself to resume its mortar attacks. Conversely, if no targets are in sight, the Hermit Crab actively hunts down a target, showcasing a responsive and adaptive AI.
In summary, the Hermit Crab introduces a fresh layer of challenge and strategic engagement to Risk of Rain 2, requiring players to navigate its unique behavior and employ creative tactics to overcome its formidable Mortar Volley. This nuanced approach to monster design adds depth to the game and ensures that each encounter with the Hermit Crab is a memorable experience for players.
