Hiding the Participants List from Students - Moodle (2024)
In some classes, it may be desirable to hide the list of participants from students. For example, student graders appear in the course participants listing. Some faculty prefer to keep the names of graders hidden from students. It is possible to remove the permission to view the participants listing from the student roles.
Click on the Participants link below the course title
In the dropdown menu, select Permissions
In the Filter textbox enter the words "View participants". A single row of permissions should be displayed.
Click on the trashcan next to all the student roles to remove the ability to see the participants listing. Student roles include: Student, Registered Student, and Auditor
To verify that the Participants list is hidden from students by click on your image (top right) and selecting Switch role to.... Select the student role and verify that the Participants link is gone. Click on your image and select Return to my normal roleto exit the student view.
Changing Moodle permissions can cause unintended consequences. Make sure you are changing the proper permissions. Please get in touch with your Academic Technologist if you have any questions.
Filter the list by typing 'Participants' in the filter field. Make sure you uncheck the two capabilities called View participants. By default the Course: View participants check box is ticked to Allow. Uncheck this.

Students may also see their own attendance record if the activity is not hidden. The optional Attendance block allows teachers quick access to the Attendance functionality, and allows students quick access to a summary report for their own attendance.
With visible groups, students can see which other groups are doing the same activities as they are; with separate groups, they do not know which other groups are doing the same activities. Using groups with discussion forums allow teachers to restrict interaction between students.
All activity in Moodle is logged. Pretty much all activity on the Internet is logged - it is not a matter of privacy. However, if the teacher posts the test on Moodle prior to the test, it does not seem totally fair that you would get in trouble for that.
Categories may be easily hidden or shown via Administration>Site administration>Courses>Manage courses and categories and clicking the 'eye' icon of the category you wish to hide.
The Participants link enables teachers to easily enrol, view, search for, filter, edit and delete course participants. The Participants link can be accessed from Course navigation in the Boost theme or the Administration block in other themes.
