Our Story
Since our establishment, NDB has evolved to become a major provider of sustainable development solutions. We stay true to our mandate to guide how we work and the decisions we make every step of the way.
In 2021, NDB Board of Governors approved the admission of Bangladesh, UAE, Egypt and Uruguay into NDB family, which heralded the beginning of the Bank’s expansion as a global multilateral institution.
Key Milestones

2012
The establishment of a new Development Bank was considered by the BRICS leaders.
2013
BRICS leaders agreed on the feasibility of establishing the NDB.
2014
The Agreement for establishing NDB was signed during the sixth BRICS Summit in Fortaleza by the leaders.
2015
Inaugural meeting of the NDB Board of Governors held on 7 July 2015.
Mr. K.V.Kamath appointed as the first President.
2016
NDB received the first instalment of the paid-in capital from its five founding member countries.
The NDB became fully operational.
2017
NDB’s General Strategy for 2017-2021 was approved by the Board of Governors.
NDB opened its first regional office – Africa Regional Center (ARC) in Johannesburg.
2018
NDB received AA+ Credit Rating from Fitch and S&P, cementing its access to global financial markets.
2019
NDB’s Americas Regional Office (ARO) in São Paulo with a sub-office in Brasília was established.
Moving beyond the USD funding, NDB approved loans denominated in EUR, CNY, ZAR and CHF.
2020
NDB earmarked a total of USD 10 billion as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting immediate measures and economic recovery of its member countries.
Mr. Marcos Prado Troyjo was elected as the President of the NDB.
NDB established the Eurasian Regional Centre (ERC) in Moscow.
2021
NDB admitted Bangladesh, Egypt, UAE, and Uruguay as new member countries.
NDB moved to its permanent HQ in Shanghai.
2022
India Regional Office in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City was established.
NDB’s General Strategy for 2022–2026 was approved by Board of Governors.
2023
H.E. Mrs. Dilma Rousseff was elected as the President of the NDB.
NDB joined forces with other MDBs to contribute to COP28 Agenda.
