How big is LinkedIn's market in EU countries? (2024)

How big is LinkedIn's market in EU countries? (1)

For many North American marketers, reaching audiences in EU countries has been a bit of a mystery. While Google and Facebook dominate much of search and social media across the globe, online activity has always varied by culture. For example, while the EU as a whole embraces policies protecting user privacy (GDPR and DSA for example), Germany in particular is known to have lower rates of social media usage, preferring homegrown job sites like Stepstone and Xing to LinkedIn.

How big is LinkedIn's market in EU countries? (3)

So last year when the Digital Services Act went into effect in the EU, advertisers and marketers got a deeper look into many social networks' reach and presence in the daily lives of consumers. This was also the first time LinkedIn disclosed the number of Monthly average logged-out site visits (ie Unique Visitors) and Monthly average logged-in active users, aka MAUs - the standard industry metric for social networks.

What can we learn about LinkedIn's users from this new report? Out of the 450 million people living in EU member countries, nearly 3 out of 10 people (29.4%) visited LinkedIn an average month, and almost exactly 1 in 10 EU residents were logged-in users that month (October 2023).

To help normalize the data between countries and identify areas of opportunity and challenges, I indexed this user data against the share of each market's population. Here's the full set of data for your own analysis, and these are a few of my insights:

How big is LinkedIn's market in EU countries? (4)

  • Markets with a high population of English speakers represented some of the biggest LinkedIn markets: The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, and Ireland all indexed high against the EU average
  • Some countries with strong regional job boards which greater support local language preferences under-indexed in LinkedIn usage: Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, and Germany. But others markets like France, with notable job search sites like CadreEmploi, or high market share by global competitors like Indeed still had above-average LinkedIn usage
  • Even countries with a lower share of MAUs still had a LOT of monthly visitors engaging with LinkedIn content: Germany had the most with 26 million unique visitors that month (nearly 1 in 3 Germans), or Estonia which had a small MAU audience but still had nearly 3 out 5 citizens visiting LinkedIn

And while the data shows LinkedIn is a key touchpoint for any business's presence in the EU, this is only one data set to benchmark and may need to be taken with a grain of salt - LinkedIn reports 700k monthly logged-out site visits in Luxemborg, which only has an estimated population of 660,924.

Although it's unfair to make generalizations about whole countries, much less the buyer personas who live within each market, it's exciting to gain more insights about the engagement rates of business people and job seekers on one of the biggest platforms in the world.
