1 Know the project
Before you can identify the most important challenges facing a project, you need to understand the project itself. What are its goals, scope, deliverables, timeline, budget, stakeholders, and risks? How does it align with the organization's strategy and vision? What are the current status and progress of the project? You can research these aspects by reviewing the job description, the company website, the industry trends, and any relevant news or reports. You can also ask clarifying questions during the interview to get more details and insights.

Ensuring that the scope is fully defined and agreed upon by the key stakeholders is critical. Aside from knowing that time, quality, and scope is the iron triangle, so is the project sponsor satisfaction! When interviewing I would ask the project sponsor what does the end goal look like for you? During the execution phase of the project it is as critical to provide timely updates on project status.

The primary challenges in my current project revolve around stakeholders' meetings preceding project commencement. In a culturally diverse and developing country like Papua New Guinea, navigating stakeholder interactions proves intriguing. Managing this involves a deep dive into the local culture and understanding the diverse communities within the project area. Effectively communicating the project's initiation requires an open-minded approach, as it demands learning about new aspects and translating the project's message to the community. Despite the complexity, we tackled this challenge by fostering an open-minded attitude towards embracing and understanding the unique aspects of the local environment.

2 Choose relevant challenges
Once you have a good grasp of the project, you can select two or three challenges that are relevant, specific, and significant. You want to avoid generic or trivial issues that could apply to any project, such as lack of communication, scope creep, or resource constraints. Instead, you want to focus on challenges that are unique or critical to the project's success, such as regulatory changes, technical complexity, stakeholder conflicts, or market competition. You should also explain why these challenges are important and how they affect the project's objectives and outcomes.

It depends on the size of the projects and its challenges complexity for deciding what tool to use seeking solutions, for one instance brainstorming, creativity and free association would work well in more creative and day to day issues that arise and face the project team. While the Delphi Technique, RBS, cause and effect diagram, go for more complex issues that would require more analysis of the challenge and suggestion of different scenarios for response, they also work with financial, legal and contract disputes challenges.

I think major challenges in showing enthusiasm for a project may include burnout, lack of motivation, or external factors affecting team morale. Overcoming these challenges requires effective leadership, fostering a positive work environment, recognizing achievements, and aligning team members with the project's purpose to sustain enthusiasm and motivation throughout its duration. Whatever you do have fun in the process....

Confidence is crucial to success. Sometimes, simply demonstrating that you are confident in your abilities is enough to lead others to share that confidence. Don't be afraid to follow up after a meeting with someone to further articulate your enthusiasm and interest in the project. One major lesson I've learned throughout my project management career is the importance of demonstrating and teaching the team the immense value of clear and consistent communication, even if the information seems redundant. Ensuring that your team is on the same page is advantageous when facing challenges, as it accelerates the achievement of solutions.

When talking about challenges you might face when working on a project, it is important to remember that not everything you or the team tries is going to work, and that is okay! Acknowledge that, on the job and in an interview. Recognizing that it is okay to fail, and to give others on your team that ability too, is important. When we fail, we learn. And when we learn, we approach projects in different ways, and often better ways, with better solutions. Bottom line, one of the challenges you will face in working on a project is knowing when to reevaluate, to redefine and redirect. Failing isn't bad, failing may be essential to success! The challenge is giving yourself and your team permission to fail. Talk about that!
