1 Assess your needs
Before you go shopping, take a look at your current wardrobe and identify what you already have, what you need, and what you can donate or sell. Consider your work environment, dress code, and personal preferences. Make a list of the essential items that you wear most often, such as a suit, a blouse, a skirt, a pair of pants, a dress, a jacket, and a coat. These are the pieces that you should invest in quality and fit, as they will form the basis of your outfits.

The best way is to shop in your closet first. Analyze the state of basic pieces and discard what is worn out or torn, make a list of those items that need to be replaced, and save them. Try in front of a mirror your favorite outfits, your not-so-favorite, and also those you have never worn. Start a mix-and-match exercise, and you will discover new outfits, it is good to work with a color pallet but be unafraid to spice things up with an unexpected color, this will add a surprising upgrade to your looks. Also, do not shy away from mixing different prints, you will always find a hidden color that can act as a balancing color that closes a new look. Experimentation and organization are key.

As a certified image consultant, I firmly believe that one of the most crucial steps to looking and feeling your absolute best is understanding your personal colour palette. The right colours can not only make you look healthier but they can also project an aura of confidence and power. I always recommend that my clients start their image transformation journey with a colour consultation. This allows us to identify the hues that enhance their natural beauty and align their wardrobes with their personal style. Not only does knowing your colours help you purchase the right clothes, but it also eliminates any orphan clothing in your closet. These are the garments that you don't like, don't fit, and don't make you feel fabulous.

Fashion and Style are sworn enemies! The very first step is to talk to a professional stylist who can find the unique 'You' within the confines of what society has been telling you about your style and personal branding. Once you're bringing out the joy in who you are...then we start to see the external brand expression that needs to be built.

2 Choose a color palette
One way to save money and time is to choose a color palette that matches your skin tone, hair color, and personality. A color palette consists of a few neutral colors, such as black, navy, gray, beige, or white, and one or two accent colors, such as red, blue, green, or purple. By sticking to a color palette, you can mix and match your clothes easily and create different looks with fewer items. You can also accessorize with scarves, belts, jewelry, or shoes to add some flair and variety.

Choose your color! The type of clothes and style are very important, but color psychology also has a big influence in providing balance in building your professional looks. Mixing and matching color combinations sometimes creates something more professional and elegant.

Another thing I have found helpful again is the fact that clarity on color pallets helps to play with accessories much more, so even with very similar litres pairing, the difference in the look is more diverse and different.

Colours are integral to how you feel and what you're projecting to your prospects. Each colour represents an emotion for you, and also what they will see. We natural are inclined to warm tones or cool tones based on our natural palette. So don't go for what's in fashion right now, because styling is all about bringing forth the shapes, colours, textures and archetype that is within you.

3 Shop smart
When you shop for your professional wardrobe, look for quality over quantity. Avoid fast fashion and trendy items that will go out of style soon or fall apart after a few washes. Instead, look for classic and timeless pieces that are made of durable and comfortable fabrics, such as wool, cotton, silk, or linen. Check the seams, buttons, zippers, and hems for any signs of poor craftsmanship or damage. Try on the clothes and make sure they fit well and flatter your body shape. If you need to alter them, factor in the cost and time.

In my experience, most items can be sourced for a fraction of the original cost by shopping at pre-loved sources. If you can identify a few key brands you love and know which of their sizes fits you best, you can search for those brands and sizes on sites like eBay, Vinted and Oxfam and set up search alerts to see what new stock comes up.

To shop on a budget, buy your classics and accessorise with your inner style archetype. Create a pinterest board first of how you see yourself (post consultation with a stylist) and build on that. I cannot tell you how good the quality of classic pieces are getting in Target. And also online, but you must know your measurements (not sizing) as many are Asian size which is very different to European.

4 Compare prices
Another way to save money is to compare prices and look for discounts, sales, or coupons. You can use online tools or apps to track the prices of the items you want and get alerts when they go down. You can also browse online marketplaces or thrift stores for second-hand or vintage clothes that are in good condition. You can find some unique and high-quality pieces for a fraction of the original price. However, be careful of online scams, hidden fees, or fake reviews. Always check the seller's reputation, the return policy, and the shipping costs.

If you have the time do compare prices. Many garments are made by the same factory and white labelled through drop-shipping. Do this if you have the time. However if you're really specific about your body shape you will need to go in-store. FB marketplace is exceptional for pre-loved pieces but do make sure you know your size perfectly in this space.

5 Care for your clothes
Finally, you can extend the life and value of your professional wardrobe by taking good care of your clothes. Follow the washing instructions on the labels and use gentle detergents and cold water. Hang or fold your clothes properly and store them in a clean and dry place. Repair any minor damages, such as loose buttons, ripped seams, or stains, as soon as possible. You can also learn some basic sewing skills or invest in a steamer or an iron to keep your clothes in shape and fresh.

Good quality basics take you a long way. Build a capsule wardrobe of workwear that can be mixed and matched - classic white shirts, a long shift (can be perfect for daywear and transition for evening), a tailored black pant, and a good blazer, plus some more fitted tees for when work is a little more casual. Explore stores and try things on to ensure they fit, then hold tight until sales. Cos, Country Road etc are brilliant for wardrobe basics that will work hard for you for years to come.

We are ALL time poor these days so make sure you know how to wash your garments (on gentle cycle or in a mesh bag) or when to dry clean... Depending on your occupation, you'll be buying your wardrobe based on the quality that is expected. For high ticket pieces it is easy to get protection bags from Temu, Kmart or Target, and for others, keep fragrant lining in your drawers for your own pleasure. Regarding repairs, yes do this if buttons come off but if you have pieces that are torn RYCYCL is an excellent business where you can by bags and send for clothes to become new clothes!

I love to find markdowns and bargain-hunting! Bonus when I get compliments on these items. Not everybody has the time or interest to do this, so here are some tips.Invest in key pieces that need to look expensive, like blazers, trousers, dresses, shoes, and bags. You will get the most cost per wear from these items. Use the LBD rule and buy staples that can be transformed with accessories and underpinnings. Tailoring, although expensive is another important factor in looking polished and put together.Use technology to get on mailing lists, emails, and texts, or download an app for the best prices.Get a price adjustment. If the item goes on sale within the allotted retailer's timeframe.Use your credit card's price guarantee.

I highly recommend considering renting your clothes! I have done this for a couple of years and I absolutely love it. Why invest in a deprecating asset? Nuuly is my favorite for those who may have a slightly more casual workplace. Rent the Runway is my recommendation for those who may need something a little more upscale. It is a great value, especially for people who love to have things in their closet that move with trends, seasons, or body changes. I love it!

Wear what fits your body form more that what is trendy. Your clothes must fit you well and hang on you properly not highlight your flaws. If your clothes don’t fit you well, even if they are the right color and quality you won’t will feel confident enough and you can end up wasting your hard earned money.

Been there and done that. Being an international student with limited budget - these strategic choices have worked for me. Thrift stores, sales, and timeless pieces are your allies. Invest in versatile staples that mix and match, and don't underestimate the power of accessories. Building a budget-friendly wardrobe is not just about saving money; it's about curating a collection that reflects your style and professional image with thoughtful intention. Buy pieces that you can use with multiple matches.

A capsule wardrobe is a game-changer for creating a work wardrobe. It's about curating a collection of versatile, timeless pieces that effortlessly blend style and professionalism. Save time, reflect your personal taste, and invest in quality for a sustainable and cost-effective approach to fashion. Ideal for those with a busy lifestyle, it's a streamlined way to look polished every day. A good blazer, black pants, tan pants, crisp white button down shirt are all great staple pieces to start with. I like to stick to basics so I can mix & match. Layering pieces are worth investing in. Add in personality with accessories. Chunky jewelry, a colored sweater draped over the shoulders or interesting shoes are all simple ways to do this.
