1 Set realistic expectations

The first step to learning programming while working full time is to set realistic expectations for yourself. Don't expect to master a new language or framework in a few weeks or months. Programming is a complex and evolving field that requires constant practice and learning. Instead, focus on setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals that match your skill level, interests, and availability. For example, you might aim to complete a certain online course, build a small project, or solve some coding challenges within a given time frame.

When embarking on learning programming while balancing a full-time job, it's crucial to establish realistic expectations. Mastery of a new language or framework doesn't happen overnight; programming demands ongoing dedication and practice. Instead of aiming for rapid mastery, concentrate on setting SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—that align with your proficiency, interests, and schedule. For instance, consider completing an online course, undertaking a small project, or tackling coding challenges within a designated timeframe. By setting attainable objectives, you can steadily progress in your programming journey while effectively managing your workload.

2 Choose the right resources

The next step is to choose the right resources to learn from. There are many options available, such as books, blogs, podcasts, videos, courses, bootcamps, and mentors. Depending on your learning style, budget, and preferences, you might prefer one or more of these resources over others. However, the key is to choose resources that are relevant, up-to-date, and engaging. You don't want to waste your time on outdated or irrelevant information, or get bored or frustrated by poorly designed or delivered content. You can also use online platforms like Stack Overflow , GitHub , or Reddit to find answers to your questions, get feedback on your code, or join communities of other learners.

Next day, revise and learn another smaller topic or do the practical application. Or just find out why that topic exists, and what challenges it solves. Be curious!3. Once you're familiar with language/stack just increase learning time by a bit. 4. Join groups, where people are in the same boat as you.

4 Apply what you learn

The fourth step is to apply what you learn as soon as possible. Learning programming is not just about memorizing syntax or concepts, but also about solving problems and creating solutions. The best way to reinforce your learning is to use it in real-world scenarios. You can do this by building your own projects, participating in hackathons, contributing to open source, or freelancing. These activities will not only help you practice and improve your skills, but also showcase your portfolio, network with other developers, and potentially earn some income.

5 Review and revise

The fifth step is to review and revise your learning regularly. Learning programming is an ongoing process that requires constant feedback and improvement. You need to check your progress, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and adjust your goals and strategies accordingly. You can do this by taking quizzes, tests, or assessments, asking for feedback from peers or mentors, or reviewing your code and projects. You can also use tools like Anki , Codecademy , or LeetCode to review and practice your skills, learn new topics, or prepare for interviews.

Also try to integrate things learned so far, and find if you can use all of them together in a single problem.ex: building a calculator -1. perform basic operations, 2. print the results. 3. Take inputs from the user. 4. Try to memorize the last 10 inputs, and show history etc.

Revision is important but it's better to stay in touch than forgetting and reviewing.Always try to keep your goals and priorities clear with your manager to keep getting the right kind of work. Work that will help you stay in touch with things that you want to improve upon. However it's not always feasible to get the right kind of project in the company. So, self paced projects are generally the best way to keep in touch or even review and revise. If you can't commit to projects, just take some problems here and there like quizses, puzzles, competitive programming questions or even such collaborative articles on LinkedIn.

You can learn programming while working full-time. Like any other skill, you get better through consistent practice and application.Set aside time daily. Initially, it'll feel like you're getting nowhere, and you'll get frustrated; this is normal. Keep pushing on.Some will advise you to work on a project; this can be a good move to work toward some end goal. But, if you're brand new to programming, your time is better spent learning the basics of programming well than how to build a TODO application you might need help understanding.Avoid object-oriented programming (OOP) initially; it will confuse you. Learn about loops, blocks, variables, scoping, functions, etc. These are the basis of everything else.Lastly, have fun doing it.
