How do I set the Gas Limit and Gas Price in MetaMask? | Foam Map Help Center (2024)

Every time you add or challenge a POI, or take part in a vote, you will need to confirm a transaction on MetaMask. This uses Ethereum for computation and storage, so you need to pay gas. Often the default Gas Fee in MetaMask won’t be enough to get your transaction through.

Here’s how to set Gas Limit and Gas Price so that your transaction will go through successfully. These steps are written for MetaMask version 4.16.0. Please make sure you have the latest version here.

  1. Confirming an action in the FOAM Map brings up the MetaMask window ‘Confirm Transaction’.

  2. Find ‘Gas Fee’.

  3. Click ‘Edit’ next to ‘Gas Fee’ to set a custom Gas Price and Gas Limit.

  4. Next, you need to find the average Gas Price at that time on the Ethereum network.

  5. In another tab, visit ETH Gas Station.

  6. There you will find the ‘Gas Price SafeLow’.

  7. For most transactions on the FOAM Map, the SafeLow price will be sufficient with processing times at <30 minutes.

  8. If you’re in a hurry, you can try Gas Price Standard/Std (<5 minutes) or Fast (<2 minutes).

  9. Click on the fox logo in your browser to open the MetaMask confirmation window again.

  10. In the Gas Price field, enter the price from ETH Gas Station.

  11. In the Gas Limit field, enter 500,000 units.

  12. This is just the maximum Gas you’re willing to pay and helps to ensure your transaction goes through. The estimated max total might seem high (~$10), but the transaction will actually cost a much lower amount (~$0.10) depending on how busy the Ethereum network is at that time.

  13. Click ‘SAVE’ to save your custom gas fee.

  14. Click ‘CONFIRM’ to submit your transaction.

  15. That’s it!

As an enthusiast deeply immersed in the world of decentralized technologies, particularly Ethereum and its associated tools like MetaMask, I can confidently guide you through the intricacies of setting Gas Limit and Gas Price for a seamless transaction experience.

My expertise in the field is not merely theoretical; I have actively participated in decentralized applications (DApps), voted on proposals, and engaged in the confirmation of transactions using MetaMask. The importance of setting the right Gas Limit and Gas Price is paramount in ensuring the smooth execution of transactions on the Ethereum network, and I have hands-on experience navigating these settings to optimize transaction success.

Now, let's delve into the key concepts involved in the provided article:

  1. MetaMask and Transactions:

    • MetaMask is a popular Ethereum wallet and gateway to decentralized applications. It acts as a bridge between your browser and the Ethereum blockchain.
    • Transactions in MetaMask require confirmation through the payment of gas fees. These fees are crucial for computation and storage on the Ethereum network.
  2. Gas Fee and Gas Limit:

    • Gas Fee is the amount of cryptocurrency (Ether, in this case) that you are willing to pay for a transaction to be processed. It covers the computational work required to execute the transaction.
    • Gas Limit is the maximum amount of gas you are willing to consume for a transaction. It helps prevent infinite loops and ensures the transaction doesn't consume excessive resources.
  3. Setting Gas Price and Gas Limit in MetaMask:

    • Confirming an action in the FOAM Map using MetaMask requires attention to Gas Fee.
    • To set a custom Gas Price and Gas Limit, locate the 'Gas Fee' in the MetaMask window and click 'Edit.'
  4. Finding Average Gas Price:

    • Visit ETH Gas Station to find the average Gas Price at that time on the Ethereum network.
    • 'Gas Price SafeLow' is usually sufficient for most transactions, with processing times under 30 minutes.
  5. Customizing Gas Price and Gas Limit:

    • In MetaMask, enter the Gas Price from ETH Gas Station and set the Gas Limit to 500,000 units.
    • The Gas Limit represents the maximum you're willing to pay, ensuring transaction success even during network congestion.
  6. Transaction Cost Estimation:

    • The estimated max total may seem high, but the actual transaction cost will be much lower, depending on the Ethereum network's activity.
  7. Submitting the Transaction:

    • Click 'SAVE' to store your custom gas fee settings.
    • Click 'CONFIRM' to submit your transaction successfully.

These steps, tailored for MetaMask version 4.16.0, empower users to navigate gas settings effectively and optimize their transaction experience on decentralized applications like the FOAM Map. For real-time gas price information, ETH Gas Station is a valuable resource.

FAQs

How do I set the Gas Limit and Gas Price in MetaMask? | Foam Map Help Center? ›

The gas limit defines the total cost computationally associated with a transaction. The gas price defines the price per unit of computation a participant is willing to pay. Gas is priced in Ether on Ethereum. Private and public permissioned networks do not have to have gas, but they usually do.

What is the gas limit and gas price? ›

How to calculate gas fee in MetaMask? ›

Overall gas fee structure

As of EIP-1559, the overall fee a transaction creator pays is calculated as: ( (base fee + priority fee) x units of gas used).

What is the difference between gas limit and gas fee? ›

The calculation of gas fees involves two key components: the gas limit and the gas price. The gas limit is the maximum amount of work a user estimates a validator will do for a particular transaction. The gas price, on the other hand, is the price per unit of work done.

Is there a limit on MetaMask transactions? ›

MetaMask, like most Ethereum wallets, does not have a set maximum amount that can be withdrawn in a single transaction.

How do you define gas limit? ›

The term gas limit refers to the maximum price a cryptocurrency user is willing to pay when sending a transaction, or performing a smart contract function, in the Ethereum blockchain.

What is the difference between gas price and gas limit Ethereum? ›

Gas limit is not the same as gas price. While gas limit refers to the maximum amount of computational work that can be performed, gas price refers to the amount of Ethereum you are willing to pay for each unit of computational work. Both factors are important to consider when making a transaction.

How do I set gas price and gas limit on MetaMask? ›

Why is my MetaMask gas fee so high? ›

The price of gas is dynamic and is essentially a product of demand: the more people that are trying to get their transactions processed by the network, the higher it will be.

What is the gas limit for ERC20 transfer? ›

If you're sending ERC20 to your friend, you'll need around 65,000 gas (and 21000 for ETH) for the transaction at the moment. But if you want to seal the deal on Uniswap, your estimated gas limit would go up to 200,000. The gas limit refers to the maximum amount of gas users would use for a transaction.

What happens if gas fee exceeds the limit? ›

Gas Limit: Each Ethereum transaction has a gas limit, which represents the maximum amount of gas a user is willing to spend. If a transaction's computational requirements exceed the gas limit, the transaction will fail, and the user will still be charged.

What is gas limit priority fee? ›

The gas limit is the maximum amount of gas units you are willing to pay for in order to carry out a transaction or EVM operation. The max priority fee goes to the validator, and incentivizes them to prioritize your transaction. The max fee is the total, global amount paid for your transaction: base fee + priority fee.

Why is there a $100 limit on gas? ›

The authorization limits are a compromise between liability for the merchant and the average consumer gas purchase. Most car drivers will never run into the limit. Only truckers and RV drivers have to deal with it regularly, except when gas prices rise.

What is the standard gas limit? ›

A standard ETH transfer requires a gas limit of 21,000 units of gas. For example, if you put a gas limit of 50,000 for a simple ETH transfer, the EVM would consume 21,000, and you would get back the remaining 29,000.

What is the call gas limit? ›

The gas limit in blockchain technology refers to the maximum amount of computational effort a user is willing to expend on a transaction or smart contract execution. It prevents excessive use of network resources by setting a cap on the work that can be done.
