Choose your iPad charger
Ask yourself the following questions when you choose an iPad charger.
- Which connector does your iPad have?
- Do you want to charge your iPad extra fast?
- Can you still use old chargers and cables?
Before you can answer these questions, you first have to know which iPad you have. Don't know? We'll help you find out.
Which connector does your iPad have?
Your iPad can have 2 different connectors, namely Lightning or USB-C. MaJust like iPhone, iPad Air/Mini (2019), and iPad (up to and including 2021) still have a Lightning port. Most of the new iPad models have a USB-C port. In the overview above, you can see which cable you need for which iPad.
Do you want to charge your iPad extra fast?
iPad models have a large battery, so it takes them a long time to charge. With an iPad fast charger, you can save a lot of time. For the iPad and iPad Mini, you use a 20W Power Delivery fast charger. It charges your iPad 2 times faster compared to when you don't use a fast charger. You can charge your iPad Pro and iPad Air even faster with a 30W iPad Pro charger. A full charge takes 2 hours, instead of up to 10.5 hours when you don't use a fast charger. You can also easily use this 30W fast charger for other iPad models or your iPhone. This isn't harmful, because the charger will never supply too much power.
it takes this long to charge up to 100%
Model iPad | Normal charger | 20W fast charger | 30W fast charger |
---|---|---|---|
iPad | 9 hours | 2.5 hours | n.a. |
iPad Pro 11 inches | 8 hours | 2.5 hours | 2 hours |
iPad Pro 12.9 inches | 10.5 hours | 2.5 hours | 2 hours |
iPad Air | 8 hours | 2.5 hours | 2 hours |
iPad Mini | 5.5 hours | 2 hours | n.a. |
Can you use old cables and chargers?
You can still use some old chargers for your iPad. You don't need an iPad charger from Apple, a different brand works as well. The most important thing is that the cable has the same connector as your iPad. In addition, you should check if you have a fast charger. Fast chargers have an oval USB-C port, regular chargers have a rectangular USB-A port. Without a fast charger, charging takes a long time. It can take up to 11 hours. Keep in mind that old USB-A cables don't fit on these fast chargers.
