Here’s what else to consider
Formatting a partition is a common way to erase data and prepare a disk for a new operating system or file system. However, sometimes you may accidentally format the wrong partition or realize that you need some files that were stored on the formatted partition. Is there a way to recover data from a formatted partition? The answer is yes, but it depends on several factors, such as the type of formatting, the type of file system, and the availability of backup tools. In this article, we will explain how formatting works, what data recovery software can do, and how to prevent data loss in the future.

1 How formatting works
Formatting a partition is the process of creating or changing the file system on a disk. A file system is a way of organizing and storing data on a disk, such as FAT32, NTFS, or EXT4. When you format a partition, you essentially delete the previous file system and create a new one. However, formatting does not necessarily overwrite the data on the disk. It only removes the references to the data in the file system, making the disk space available for new data. The actual data may still be intact on the disk, unless it is overwritten by new data or by a low-level formatting that erases the disk sectors.

There are two main types of formatting: quick and full. A quick format essentially erases the old file system by writing a new one on top of it. A full format, on the other hand, goes a step further by overwriting every sector of the device with zeros. However, there can be exceptions where a 'safe format' is possible. In this case, even after overwriting with zeros, a random pattern of bits would still be written to each memory cell for additional security.

Low level formatting can even detect bad sectors and marks them in the new file system so that data should not get copied to those bad areas.-There are some low level formatting tools which can reallocate(Sector Reallocation) them if the drive supports this feature. -In SSDs these bad sectors can be managed via drive's firmware using features like wear leveling and bad block management

2 What data recovery software can do
Data recovery software is a type of software that can scan a disk and try to find and restore data that has been deleted or formatted. Data recovery software works by looking for patterns or signatures of data on the disk, such as file headers, clusters, or sectors. It then reconstructs the data and saves it to another location. However, data recovery software is not always successful. It may not be able to find all the data, especially if the disk has been overwritten or damaged. It may also not be able to recover the original file names, folders, or attributes, depending on the type of file system and formatting.

The success of data recovery software largely depends on two factors: its ability to reconstruct file system information and recognize file signatures. Leading solutions, such as Disk Drill, support the most commonly used file systems and file types right out of the box to make the data recovery process painless. Some data recovery applications aimed at advanced users and professionals, like R-Studio, even make it possible to add custom file signatures, so they can theoretically be used to recover any deleted file that's still physically present on the storage device in a sufficiently intact manner.

Here's what a data recovery program (like Disk Drill or DMDE) typically does when attempting to recover files from a formatted storage device (or partition):- File System Search: The program starts by searching for existing or remnant file systems on the disk. This helps locate deleted or lost files based on the structure and organization defined by the file system.- File Signature Search: In addition to file system information, recovery programs also employ file signature scanning. These signatures are unique patterns that identify specific file types (like documents, images, or videos). By searching for these patterns on the device, the program can potentially recover files even if the file system information is lost.

Data recovery software can find even previous partitions which are lost by formatting or deleting partitions. The data recovery software can even have the ability to search for files when there is no file system entries available for the lost files, using signature based search can even find files by there headers. Each file will have a unique signature which can be searched and located by this software.

3 How to prevent data loss in the future
The best way to prevent data loss from formatting or any other cause is to back up your data regularly. A backup is a copy of your data that you store on another device, such as an external hard drive, a cloud service, or a flash drive. A backup can help you restore your data in case of a disk failure, a virus attack, a human error, or any other disaster. You should have at least one backup of your important data, and preferably more than one, in different locations. You should also update your backup frequently, so that you have the latest version of your data.

- Set up a backup for important folders on the drive.- Before performing any actions related to files, double-check that the correct file/disk is selected.- Do not neglect to check the SMART indicators of your drive.- Prevent third parties from using the device containing important information.- Configure the system to send files to the Recycle Bin, even on USB drives.

4 How to choose a data recovery software
If you need to recover data from a formatted partition, you will need a data recovery software that supports the type of file system and formatting that you used. For example, if you formatted a partition with NTFS, you will need a software that can recover NTFS data. You will also need a software that can handle different types of data, such as photos, videos, documents, or music. You should look for a software that has a good reputation, a user-friendly interface, and a reasonable price. You should also check the reviews and ratings of the software, and see if it offers a free trial or a preview of the recovered data.

- Search for software that specifically supports your requirements. This includes compatibility with your file system, operating system, and the type of files you're trying to recover.- Don't rely solely on vendor information. Look for reviews on independent websites like Pandora Data Recovery Mentor and forums to get unbiased opinions on different software options.- Consider asking for recommendations from the technical community. There are online forums dedicated to data recovery, like /r/datarecovery/, where you can get insights from experienced users.

5 How to use a data recovery software
Before you use a data recovery software, it's important to stop using the disk that contains the formatted partition, to avoid overwriting the data you want to recover. Additionally, you should connect the disk to another computer, or use a bootable disk or USB drive, to run the data recovery software and avoid installing it on the same disk you want to scan. When you're ready, follow these general steps: launch the software and select the disk or partition you want to scan; choose the type of scan (quick or deep); wait for the scan to complete and review the results; select the files or folders you want to recover and choose a destination; confirm the recovery and wait for it to finish. Remember that any recovered files should be saved on a different disk than the one that was scanned.

Make sure you wait for the full deep scan to complete and then look for your lost data and save the data. Doing multiple scans might take more time and you might end up damaging the drive more as some drives might have mechanical issues which might make the drive fail due to overuse.

The best option would be to find an article from the developer about your data loss scenario and follow the instructions step by step. Also, adhere to these basic tips:- If you are dealing with a damaged device, create a backup if possible.- Use all scanning methods for optimal results.- Wait for the scan to finish for the best outcomes.- Do not save recovered files to the same device.

If your disk has become RAW or unallocated due to formatting or partitioning errors, NEVER follow Windows' instructions to format the device to access it. Instead, recover files from it first, then proceed with fixing it.
