According to career expert Vicki Salemi, you can place the skills section below the education section or at the top of your resume. But make sure to add not more than six skills, shares career strategist Julie Bauke, adding that you can pick the ones that help you stand out based on the job description. You can also reframe and showcase the additional skills within other placements like the experience section, Bauke adds.

Avoid making these mistakes while preparing your CV!!I am resharing this post because I feel it’s the need of the hour! Post CA final and intermediate results I have received a lot of messages where people are asking tips for preparing their CVs.I noticed some common mistakes which candidates make while preparing their resume. Thought of sharing a few of them:✅ Using different font and text colours Keep it to black and white only. You may use bold or italics to highlight your achievements or anything that you may want your recruiter to look at. A sample format CV is there for your help on my featured posts.✅ Using very bright colours as the backgroundNever choose bright colours like yellow, pink, red etc. as the background for your CV. It puts a bad impression.✅ Prepare an ATS friendly resumeApplicant tracking system (ATS) is a software that automatically scans your resume and determines whether or not it’s relevant for the position. There are a lot of ATS friendly templates available on google.✅ Using incorrect grammar and making spelling mistakes Do proof reading atleast 3-4 times before finalizing your CV. Avoid grammatical errors as much as possible. And use spell check before you save your CV for sending.✅ Do not add your addressDo not add your address in your CV. The recruiter is only interested in your city and state.✅ Use a cover letterUsing cover letters these days is so underrated. Using cover letter puts up a good impression of you in the eyes of the recruiter. You can find a proforma cover letter on my featured posts! ✅ Stick to a single page CVRecruiters do not have so much time to read the entire history of your life. Mention only the most important achievements and let the rest be discussed when he/she calls you to ask more about you.✅ Mention about your experience in one-two liners instead of just writing the company name✅ Do not write like a dozen of hobbies and skillsPick and choose smartly amongst which hobbies and skills you want to add to your resume. Don't exaggerate about any skills unnecessarily. The recruiter might ask you some questions about your skills and if he then understands that you have no clue about it he would definitely not like it. Remember your recruiter is smarter than you. Any job hunter’s basic check list : Research: Have you done any research on the company and position you are applying for? Your preparedness will be judged here. It's important to read the job description and do research on the company's culture, needs, vision and mission, as well as customer and supplier feedback. This will help you understand the company's expectations and needs, and allow you to better align your skills and abilities with the role.Experience: Do you have any relevant experience in performing the tasks involved in the job? Can you showcase your potential to excel in this role? Your resume and in-person interview are both opportunities to highlight your experience.Communication : Communication is key in this step. Do you have strong verbal, vocal, and body language skills?Grooming and presentation : How well put together are you? Your appearance (clothing and grooming) will be evaluated.Confidence: Can you display confidence in who you are and in the present situation? Your likeability is often linked to your confidence.Storytelling: Do you have the ability to articulate your story and engage your interviewer with it? This is where you can establish a connection and build credibility. Is this somewhere linked with company needs ? Clarity of career goals: Do you have clarity on your goals and a long-term vision for your career? Without goals or vision, you may lack the motivation to grow and succeed.Skills: What professional skills do you currently possess? Are you working on developing any new ones? Do you invest in your personal development?Questions: Can you ask impactful questions based on the conversation? Remember, an interview is a conversation, not a Q&A round. If you are unable to ask engaging questions, the interviewer may view this as a lack of interest or effort on your part. Same way asking just for the sake of asking can backfire. Career with the company: Do you see yourself having a long-term career with the company? Companies often prefer to hire individuals for their careers, rather than just for a specific job. 6 things to keep in mind for the ultimate one-page resume:1️⃣ Photo is important: Having a picture on the resume is a debated concept. While some deem it to be not so important, I say it is one of the most important. Resumes are shared digitally these days and it is crucial to show some kind of human connection. Make sure the picture is clutter and noise free.2️⃣ Career objective is not important: Writing a generic career objective is a thing of the past. Your experience and academics should speak for you. Nobody reads your objective. A recruiter spends 60 seconds on average to go through the entire resume, so make sure you be to the point and utilize this window for the most important things you need to share.3️⃣ Experience should be in bullets: Never put your work experience in large paragraphs. Make sure it is written in bullets, and starts with an action term such as "Implemented, developed, strategized", and the likes of these. Also, it helps highlight the keywords that match the job description.4️⃣ Tool-based skills are important: Make sure to have a section to mention your tool-specific skills. Every other operation is automated with the help of tools and one needs to be abreast with the same. Showcase your expertise separately in a highlighted section on your resume. Tip: If you are mentioning generic tools such as MS office, try to show your level of expertise, it will help you stand out.5️⃣ Percentage of academics: See if your company asks for or has a pre-requisite of any minimum score criteria. As a thumb rule, it should be avoided, it makes a perception that may or may not be true.6️⃣ Mindfulness of co-curricular: Nobody is interested in knowing if you were the runners-up in three leg race back in 10th standard.
