Learning to drive is an exciting life experience for a young driver. Once you have your provisional licence it’s time to book some professional lessons that will help you practise regularly.
But how many will you need? There isn’t actually a setnumber of hours or lessons required and it really depends on how quickly you’reable to learn.
In this article, we’ll discuss the average number oflessons needed to pass your driving test, intensive driving courses, and theimportance of private practice.
How many driving lessons do Ineed?
Asmentioned above, there is no set amount of hours or lessons legally requiredwhen you’re learning to drive. However, on average, a learner driver needs 20hours of practice and approximately 45 hours of driving lessons to successfullypass their test.
Thetruth is that everyone is different. It may take you 45 hours or 75 hours to beready to take your test, it really doesn’t matter. The most important thing isthat, when the time comes, you are a safe and confident driver.
Discusswith your instructor what fits around your schedule and whether several shorterlessons a week or some longer sessions is most suitable. Whatever yourindividual needs, Totally Driving will work with you.

Not only will this enable an easier learning experience when you start you lessons, but this will allow you to book a driving test well in advance. With this being said, it’s very important to talk to your instructor before booking a test date was they will be able to give you a accurate time frame to book it in and information on what test centres are best suited.

Intensive driving course
An intensive driving course will mean a similar amount of driving lesson hours but in a shorter time frame. You must still hold a provisional driving license and may also need to have already passed your driving theory test.
Private practice
As well as building yourconfidence and skills in your driving lessons, you will also need to practicewith a trusted friend or family member. The DVSA recommends at least 22 hoursof private practice to reach test standard, so the more practice you can fit inthe better.
Driving test waiting times
Due to a backlog caused by the Coronavirus pandemic there are more learner drivers than usual waiting to take their driving test. Those in rural locations will probably have a fairly short waiting time however, for those in more built up areas the waiting time can be 12 weeks or more.
