An analyst position in a company can be viewed as an internal consultant role. Although analysts have different educational backgrounds and skill sets, their major function is to provide information for the company's management team to use in making decisions. Financial analysts, for example, generate financial reports analyzing the company's operating results including explanations of variances to forecast. Preparing the most important points to emphasize about your skills and background as an analyst builds your confidence -- and being confident helps you ace the interview.

Emphasize Your Communication Skills

Although analyst positions are considered "thinking" jobs rather than managerial or executive positions that direct the operations of the company, they still must be effective communicators. An analyst must clearly communicate what information he needs to complete the project he was assigned, and be able to present the results of the analysis in both written and oral form. Talk about a particularly effective presentation you made or a report you prepared that received high praise from those above you in the company.

Discuss Your Contributions

Analysis is a catalyst for action in a company. The analyst may be asked, for example, to recommend whether an upgrade to the company's information technology -- IT -- should be made. Come prepared to enthusiastically express the positive contributions you made to the companies you previously worked for. Be specific if you can: talk about how your recommendations saved the company money or increased productivity. Talk About Your People Skills

An analyst must collaborate with different departments in the company to gather the information needed for the report or recommendation he is assigned. This requires working with diverse personalities who at times may not want to cooperate with your request for information. Companies seek to hire analysts who can work diplomatically with others in the organization. On occasion the analyst may have to play a teaching role. For example, financial analysts are often called upon to teach non-financial managers how to use the company's budgeting and forecasting system. Mention any similar roles you have played in the past. Demonstrating strong people skills tells the interviewer you may be a candidate for a management position in the future.

Show Interest in the Company

This is an effective technique in any interview, but for analyst positions, showing a keen interest in the company's products or services, history and accomplishments will impress the interviewer that you took the time to learn about your prospective new employer.
