How To Adopt A Positive Money Mindset (2024)

Your mindset around money and the role it has played in your life was handed down to you just like an inheritance; it was given to you by those who influenced you as a child. Maybe it was your parents, grandparents or another important figure. No matter who it was, we all have a money story that affects how much we make and keep each and every year. But it doesn’t have to be that way and YOU CAN change your money story.

I grew up in a household where I frequently heard, “We can’t afford it”, “Money doesn’t grow on trees!”, “I’m not made of money”, and my father’s favorite…”Don’t be afraid of hard work.” These statements had a direct impact on my ability to make and keep the kind of money that I wanted each and every year.

I hate to admit this, but I was once a naysayer when it came to the idea that how you think about money is important, if not the most important, part of personal finance. That was until I learned about the concept of a “positive money mindset” and quickly realized this was an integral component of the equation that leads one to a happier financial life.

How To Adopt A Positive Money Mindset (1)

Your money mindset is the feelings and thoughts you subconsciously develop towards money from your life experiences. Because our thoughts often control our actions, developing a negative money mindset can create a barrier between you and financial health. It can keep you in a place of stress and anxiety, and it can keep you from achieving financial goals.

But just because you’ve developed a negative money mindset or negative thought patterns around money, it doesn’t mean you have to stay there.

Recognizing Is The First Step

Step onealways seems to be the hardest, and this is no exception. Being self-aware enough to recognize any sabotaging thoughts is not easy, but without doing this, you won’t be able to improve your mindset. Some examples of common self-sabotaging, negative thoughts are:

  • I’ll never get out of debt
  • I don’t make enough to save
  • I’ll never be able to afford that
  • I’ll never make as much as so-and-so
  • I will never afford a nice home

Remember the scripts you uncovered in Day 4?

Forgive Yourself

We tend to be our own worst critic and for many people, making a financial mistake is something that we hold onto forever. But holding on to that negativity and beating yourself up for mistakes you’ve made in the past can keep you from moving forward. Maybe you’ve made some bad choices, spent too much money, or landed yourself in a heap of debt. Give yourself the permission to forgive yourself and look at these mistakes as learning opportunities. Know that no one is perfect and remember that what matters most is how you move forward from that mistake. Forgiving yourself – without forgetting the mistake – can help you appreciate and learn from past experiences.

Do you need to go back to yesterday’s lesson and do some more work? Did you forget to forgive yourself?

Use Mantras

Your mindset is the beliefs you hold as truth.

When you’re having a tough day, or you feel down in the dumps, you rely on your mindset to see you through. When you’re faced with a decision that will change the course of your life, it’s your mindset that helps you take action from a place of courage and make the right choice.

Which means it’s critical that you learn to release outdated ideas and notions about what it takes to succeed and instead, consistently imprint your subconscious with the thinking and beliefs proven to work.

It might seem a bit simplistic to you, but getting what you want out of life boils down to the moments when you either allow a negative mindset to take control or let a powerful mindset step in and push you forward even when you don’t feel like it.

One of the practices I learned many years ago and still use today is a simple but beautiful money mantra. When I part with money, I thank it (or bless it) and say – “There’s always more where that came from.”

Doing and saying this completely turned me around from a person who was always worried and stressed about money and fully embracing a scarcity mindset into a person who truly believes in her heart that there IS more where that came from.

I’m not here to tell you to use this mantra, but if you do, I’ve created a printable for you to print and carry with you or hang on your wall.
Nothing is stopping you from creating your own money mantra that if said with heartfelt intent could completely transform what you believe about your current financial circ*mstances.

I hope you’ll take the time to develop your own or use one of mine I created for you.

Here’s what to do:

Say with heartfelt intent.

Carry them with you and say them throughout the day.

Post them around your house to remind you to say your affirmations.

If you like, and it’s recommended, you can say multiple affirmations each day.

Watch your head catch up to your heart and see your money situation start to change simply by using these mantras. It is possible to turn your negative beliefs into a positive money mindset.
