How to exit kiosk mode on Windows devices? - Hexnode Help Center (2024)

Jump To

Kiosk mode is a feature used to lock down a device into displaying and running policy specified app(s). Hexnode UEM provisions two types of kiosk modes for Windows devices – Single App kiosk and Multi App kiosk. Single app kiosk enables only a specified app to run in the kiosk. Multi app kiosk locks the Windows 10 PC on the Start menu, set in full-screen mode. Kiosk apps are added to the Start menu, and the user is restricted to using only those apps.

Listed below are the various methods to exit kiosk mode on your Windows device.

Exiting kiosk from the portal

Method 1: Disassociate the device/user from Policy Targets

  1. Navigate to the Policies tab. Find and open your kiosk policy.
  2. Go to the Policy Targets section on the same page.
  3. Identify the policy targets you want to disassociate the policy from and click remove. The policy target may be a device, user, device group, user group, or domain.
  4. Save the policy to deploy the changes.

Notes:

If you wish to remove all associations, click on Remove All under Policy Targets.

Method 2: Disassociate policy from the device or user

Disassociating a device

  1. Navigate to the Manage tab.
  2. Search for your device under the Devices section and click on the device name to open the device details page.
  3. Navigate to the Policies section on the same page. You’ll find your kiosk policy listed here.
Click on the bin icon beside the kiosk policy.

Notes:

If the policy is associated with a device/user group, the group has to be reconfigured to exclude the devices you want to disassociate or the whole group has to be disassociated.

In such cases, it will show the mapping status under the Policies sub-tab as Device group, and you won’t find the bin icon to remove it.

Disassociating a user

  1. Navigate to the Manage tab.
  2. Select the Users section.
  3. Search for the user and click on the username to open the user details page.
  4. Navigate to the Policies section on the same page. You’ll find your kiosk policy listed here.
  5. Click on the bin icon beside the kiosk policy.

Notes:

If the policy is associated with a user group and you want to disassociate a specific user, the user has to be removed from the user group, or the whole group has to be disassociated.

In this case, it will show the mapping status under the Policies sub-tab as a user group and you won’t find the bin icon to remove it.

Disassociating user/device group

  1. Navigate to the Manage tab.
  2. Select the User Group/Device Group section.
  3. Search for the group and select the group name to open the group details page.
  4. Navigate to the Policies section on the same page. You’ll find your kiosk policy listed here.
  5. Click on the bin icon beside the kiosk policy.

Method 3: Archive the policy

  1. Navigate to the Policies tab.
  2. Search for the associated kiosk policy and mark the checkbox to the left of the corresponding policy title.
  3. Click on the Manage dropdown menu (search just above the policies list) and select Move to Archive.

Selecting this option will move the policy to the Archived policies section and automatically disassociate the previously associated devices. You may choose to restore or delete the policy later from the Archived Policies tab.

Exiting kiosk account on the device

Method 1: Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del keys

Pressing the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys simultaneously on your kiosk device while inside the kiosk account will prompt the user to sign out. The user will be redirected to the login page from where they may log in as a different user.

Method 2: Signing out the kiosk user

Multi app kiosk opens the Start menu in full screen with the policy specified app pinned as tiles. To exit, click the user icon from the Start options and select Sign Out. Unfortunately, this method won’t work in single app kiosk mode on windows devices.

Note:

Please remember that both methods will only sign out the user from the kiosk account to display the login screen. Kiosk mode will be resumed once the user logs into this account again.

Warning:

On shut down or restart, the device will automatically sign in to the kiosk user account.
