How to Get a Walmart Credit Card with Bad Credit (2024)

Permalink Report Abuse

You probably can’t get a Walmart Credit Card with bad credit because this card requires at least fair credit for approval. That means your chances are best if your credit score is 640+. The Walmart® Store Card has the same credit score requirements, too.

That’s not to say getting a Walmart Credit Card with bad credit is impossible. Each applicant’s situation is unique, and Walmart looks at factors such as income, too. But it’s very unlikely, and not worth the additional credit score damage applying will do. That said, a Walmart Credit Card isn’t out of your reach forever. It’s possible to go from bad credit to fair credit in months, or even weeks, if you make the right moves.

Here’s how to get a Walmart Credit Card with bad credit:

  1. Get a secured card. Meant for people with bad credit, secured credit cards have the same credit-building potential as unsecured cards. You just have to put down a security deposit that acts as your credit line.
  2. Make on-time payments. Paying on time is required if you want your score to rise.
  3. Plan your credit utilization. Try to use less than 30% of your available credit.
  4. Reduce your debts. Owing less means you can borrow more.
  5. Monitor your credit. Checking your credit score and report frequently will help you figure out how to improve and when you’re ready for a Walmart Credit Card.
  6. Apply for a Walmart card. Once you get your score to 640+, your chances of success will be much better.

So, it’s unlikely you’ll get approved for a Walmart Credit Card with bad credit, but you can certainly work your way up to fair credit pretty quickly.

@jessicadsmith9809: you want to actually use your available credit - pay your bills with it - then pay it off except for 7% of the credit line - keeping a tiny balance = higher numbers month to month

How can you go from bad credit to fair in weeks? Or even months? I got a secured card, I have my Netflix account come off it monthly so it stays low and I pay on time. I then got a regular credit card and done the same. I'm literally sick to my stomach because I've been making payments on time and keeping the cards low for 7-8 months now and I'm still in the red ?. I paid off everything everything but one account that was in collections before I even got the first card??

Well, it is, however, hard to get approved for it with a low score.

However, I learned that if you prequalify for any Capital One, they will allow you up to 2 or more. So I got approved for the Platinum card with capital one with only a 552 FICO score and 645 vantage score and then I applied for the Walmart card which I knew I wouldn't get the Visa Walmart card but still did approved for the Walmart store card and I also got approved for another store card held by Capital One.

So I've learned not just with me but others that if you can get overqualified and approved for 1 card with Capital One you can usually get approved for another 1 or 2 cards.

And this is the same with other card companies cause they don't see these new accounts yet on your file. But of course, it is not good to open multiple cards cause it affects card length history. But I was rebuilding and starting over so it didn't hurt me one way or the other cause now I have 4 cards all on the same time frame. And of course, every case is different. Cause in the past I've been turned down with a higher FICO score for cards. So while the score is important it isn't everything they look at.

Yeah: increase your credit score. Check for mistakes, dispute, pay stuff on time. There's no magic involved, really.

You can't really get approved for it if you don't have at least about 650. Even if your income is great, I wouldn't risk a hard inquiry.
