Google changed the way Gmail displays your emails on May 29, 2013. The new interface is different from the old one, so this change might negatively impact your workflow. In the new interface, emails in your inbox are divided into three categories: Primary, Social and Promotions. To get back to the normal Gmail inbox, you need to turn off these categories. You can make the categories visible later, if you decide you want to use the new interface.
Disabling the Gmail Categories
Log into your Gmail account, click the "Gear" icon and choose "Settings" from the menu to navigate to the Settings page. Click the "Inbox" link to view all settings related to the inbox. Remove the check marks in front of the "Social" and "Promotions" options in the Categories section. Click the "Save Changes" button to apply and save the new settings.
