Step Up Your Decor
Hanging stockings along the staircase railing is a popular alternative to using a mantel. You can achieve this look in a couple of ways: either using self-adhesive hooks or wall hooks that screw into the wood handrail or by using decorative ribbon or ties to hang the stockings. Add in string lights, ornaments and/or garland to the railing for a little extra holiday cheer. The garland will also help to disguise any hooks or tape.
Use Your Headboard
Why not wake up in the holiday spirit every morning? A great idea for little ones' rooms, hanging stockings from the headboard or footboard not only adds festive decor to a bedroom, but it builds excitement for the season. Most stockings will have a loop you can hang around the bed; however, if your stockings don't have a loop, or if the loop is too small, simply use ribbon or hooks to hang over the head or footboard.

Whether hanging from a fireplace or on a wall, garland will support the stockings while adding to your holiday decor.
Opt for the Console Table
Existing furniture like a console table or bookcase provides a perfect spot to hang Christmas stockings without involving a new purchase or additional work. Hanging stockings from the knobs of a console table placed at an entryway is an ideal way to greet holiday guests while a bookcase or dresser donned in stockings can add a festive feeling to bedrooms, living rooms and kids' rooms.
Dress Up the Windows
Whether hung from a curtain rod or the window sill, this creative idea works for homes without mantels. When using a curtain rod, string ribbon through the stocking loop to secure the stocking to the rod. If you opt to hang the stockings from the frame or window sill, use a tack, hook or tape to secure the stocking. Add in string lights or garland to up the holiday cheer.
Play Up the Cheer
The holidays and music go hand-in-hand, so why not let your piano get in on all the decor fun? While pianos aren't the most popular choice, they make a great place to set out Christmas stockings. Scatter a few across the piano, hang them from the top or set them across the keys for a truly cheerful look.
