Reading books is the primary knowledge gaining source for any field which someone interested in. But when you searching best materials to read, it will better you having guidance on what should you read?
As an enthusiastic on stock trading in early 2011, I participated to stock trading seminar which conducted by SEC, Sri lanka (security and exchange commission of sri lanka). It was a good program for anyone who knows nothing on investments whatsoever. But in Sri lanka you can’t find the reading materials which including investment methods.
Then like for anything in this digital era, simply you can Google anything you need. And I found great website called “INVESTOPEDIA”. And coincidently I saw youtube video of mr. Warren Buffet. In one of them, he states that best book he red on investment is “THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR”. After reading THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR I found out that author of the book is Mr. Bemjamin Graham and he is the person who highly admired by mr. Warren Buffet. And he is the mentor of mr. Warren Buffet. As a young graduate mr. Warren Buffet had worked with Mr. Bemjamin Graham at his investment firm.
THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR
This book is excellent one on investment basics and I recommend you to buy one for yourself. I believe it as a hand book of investment. By buying it will be better that if you read it time to time throughout your investment career.
By Reading the book for several times. I like to give you some tips on how to read it without getting bored.
Before reading chapters I think it will be better if you read first article on appendixes, a wonderful lecture done by Mr. Warren buffet. By reading it, you will feel some trust on investment method called value investing. After that I recommend you to read each commentary by Mr. .Jason zwieg before reading each chapter. Mr. Jason had successfully summarized the essence of each chapter and had updated core principles’ through fresh data.
It’s better if you can start reading chapter 8 and Chapter 12 other than going through from one to twenty. By reading those two chapter’s first your confidence as an individual investor will boost. And there’s a phrase mentioned in this book you should never forget about investing.
“An investment operation is one which, upon through analysis promises safety of principle and adequate return. Operations not meeting these requirements are speculative”.
Along with value investing approach, this book had mentioned about financial statement analysis. By making you more curious, try to read 329th page of this book.
In this book all investors had divided to two as enterprise and defensive. But in recent books on investment, authors make this dividing to three as aggressive, moderate and defensive. So categorizing had evolved. Don’t bother about it.
By reading this book consciously, you can avoid main mistake that most investors making. It’s taking speculating as investing. It’s the greatest lesson which investor could ever learn.
I would like to mention couple of fabulous phrases in this book.
“Be sure it’s’ yours before you go into it”
“In ideal world, the intelligent investor would hold stocks only when they are cheap and sell them when they become overpriced”
“But investing isn’t about beating others at their game; it’s about controlling yourself at your own game”
Mostly throughout this book, Mr.Benjamin urging the importance of making decisions rationally. When this book published first, at that time there were nothing to read fundamentally accurate on investing. Since then “THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR” had become as it says on its cover “THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON VALUE INVESTING”. So friends, try to find and read this book and be conscious to comment about helpfulness of this article below.
