Some Instagram Stories are too good not to repost. Maybe they’re laugh-out-loud funny, support a cause you’re passionate about or feature a birthday shoutout from a friend. And since Stories only last 24 hours, you need to act fast to share them.

Technically, it’s easy to repost an IG Story, but there’s a catch – you can only easily repost content you’re tagged in. We’ll get into a few workarounds below, but remind your friends to tag (@) you when they post a Story you’ll want to share.

How to repost someone’s Instagram Story

Let’s start with the most basic way to share a Story. If you’re tagged in a Story, all you have to do is tap a button. If the original poster has a private account, only you and other people who follow them can see the Story. The process is easier with public accounts, but you can still repost private Stories for your friends.

Here’s how to repost a Story on Instagram.

1. Open the Instagram app and tap the message icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
2. Select the conversation with the Instagram user who tagged you in their Story, then tap on the Story.
3. Tap on “Add This to Your Story.”
4. Make all the edits you want, such as adding text or changing the background color.
5. Choose to share your Story with all your followers or only your close friends.

How to repost an Instagram Story you’re not tagged in

Perhaps a small business you love is doing a giveaway, and you want to get others involved. Or maybe your best friend forgot to tag you in a brunch pic. Instagram won’t give you the option to reshare this content, but there’s a hack (or two) for that. Here are a few ways to reshare Instagram Stories you’re not tagged in.

• Take a screenshot or screen recording: Taking a screenshot or recording is a simple workaround – just save it to your photos and reupload it. Since Instagram doesn’t notify the poster when you screenshot, it’s good to let them know you’re trying to share it. We recommend asking for permission and tagging the original creator in your Story.
• Share the Story with select users in a DM: You can send Stories to anyone you’re chatting with (including groups) in a direct message. At the bottom of every Story, there’s a tiny paper airplane icon in the lower right-hand corner. Tap on it to forward the Story via DM. If the original poster has a private account, only people who follow them can see it.
• Send a link: In the top right corner of every Story is a series of three dots. Tap on them to bring up a menu where you can copy a link to the Story. You can now drop that link anywhere – email, TikTok, you name it. But, you guessed it: if the original account is private and the person receiving the link doesn’t follow it, they won’t be able to see the Story.

I still can’t share Stories

If you’re still having trouble sharing a Story or letting others repost yours, there could be two reasons. The first is that you may have the Shared Content feature off. Here’s how to turn it back on:

1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
2. Tap the three lines in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
3. Tap on “Settings” in the pop-up menu.
4. Hit “Privacy,” then “Story.”
5. Scroll down to the “Sharing” header and turn on “Allow Sharing to Messages.” It will turn blue.

The second reason you may not be able to share a Story, even if you’re tagged in it, is that it’s expired. If you want to repost all that birthday love, you’ve got to hustle.

How do I stop someone from sharing my Stories?

If you don’t want people reposting a particular Story, the easiest fix is to simply not tag them in it. If you don’t want anyone to repost your Stories in general, you’ll have to go a step further and turn off the Content Sharing option.

If you don’t have a business account or access to analytics, there’s no way to tell who’s sharing your Stories (unless you’re tagged in a reposted Story). So, if you’re uncomfortable with strangers passing your Stories around, you’ll want to turn the message-sharing feature off.
