How to view student activity in Canvas? ›

In your course, click on 'People' in course navigation and you'll find some quick info there: To find a list of activity for any given student, click on the ellipsis menu to the right of their name and select 'User Details' and then on the right side of the Individual Student page click on 'Access Report'.

Learning management systems like Canvas do allow faculty to see some student activity.

Canvas offers several built-in analytics and statistics tools that allow instructors to access data about their courses. The data to may inform their ongoing course design process. Instructors may also track student use of Canvas, and students can review their own online course activity using the new analytics tool.

Canvas can log events related to user activity. For instance, it can track if a user is actively engaged with content or if they've navigated away. Some of the insights Canvas provides include: Visited websites and tabs.

Through the Quiz Log function, the system will detect when the person taking the online test opens a new tab or browser, recording and reporting any suspicious action. Canvas can also avert cheating by locking the browser during the exam. Canvas tracks the time spent by the student on each question.

Choose the name of a student and then click “View Log”. Alternatively, you can go to SpeedGrader and select “View Log”. The session information shows the start date and time [1] for the attempt [2]. The action log for the specified attempt will display a status [3] and a timestamp [4] for each quiz action.

In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link. If this link does not display, it is disabled in your course, or you might not have it Favorited. If the Assignments link is unavailable in Course Navigation, you can access course assignments through the Modules page.

Publish: set the item so that it exists for students. If you publish an item and do not set an “Available” date or put it in a locked module, it will be completely available to students and will appear in the Course Summary and calendar (if it has a due date).

What can teachers see on Canvas quizzes? ›

Can professors see if you leave canvas? Instructors can see certain activity such as: time started/stopped an exam or quiz, total time spent on the exam/quiz, date/time stamps on assignments, time spent in the course and last login. They are not notified when you logout and have no way of knowing.

Canvas will be able to detect the switching between various tabs during proctored exams. Switching of tabs is interpreted by your browser as an active attempt to access answers from the web or from any other source and you will be flagged. Canvas will not be able to detect what person is doing beyond the current page.

Canvas can also detect the opening of another tab using an activity log. The time taken without interacting with the canvas tab may cause flagging. If you spend 30 seconds without interacting with the canvas tab, you'll be flagged for cheating.

In a normal assignment environment, Canvas cannot detect screen sharing or screenshots if a student is working on them using a normal browser. The system cannot detect what you do outside their current page. However, if proctored, Canvas can detect and prevent screen sharing or taking of screenshots.

You can find work or assignments that your students have sent back to you to review in Classwork. You'll also receive an email notification. Click Review to open their work or assignment. Submissions are grouped by the templates you've assigned to your students.

To access the course access report navigate to People tab. Then either search or scroll until you find the student. Click the user's Options icon, the three vertical dots, and select User Details. On the following screen click the Interactions Report link or button.
