It is preferred that you should add memory with the same specs as the original one.
The speed is 2400 MHz because that is the fastest speed the processor can run the memory at.
But if a 2400 MHz memory module is a lot less expensive than a 2666 MHz one, you can buy one of those instead.

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06263217
The memory upgrade info can be found in chapter 1.
Two slots, max is 2 x 8 GB.
Yes, you can add an 8 GB chip with the 4 GB chip.
The crucial memory report for your model indicates you can install 2 x 16 GB of memory in your notebook and they are almost always right.

Eventually, you will want to remove the 4 GB chip and replace it with an 8 GB chip so that the memory runs in the higher performing dual data rate (DDR) mode. Not to mention you will have 16 GB of memory instead of 12.

One last question Which give more performance boost 4 + 4 dual channel or 8 + 4 single channel because many people sayings dual channel is better.

Here is my recommendation...
If you never plan on upgrading to 16 GB, you will probably be better off adding another 4 GB chip and having 8 GB running in dual channel mode, than having 12 GB running in single channel mode.
I would say the difference would be in cost savings, not performance. 4 + 4 and 4 + 8 is probably a wash.
4 + 4 = better performance. 4 + 8 = more memory.
So which is better? You would need to do some actual performance benchmarking tests like were done in the video.
Again...if you want to eventually go to 2 x 8 GB, then it would not make any sense to buy a 4 GB memory chip, just to remove it in a few months or sooner.
