Rather than just listening to your local radio stations over the airwaves, internet radio makes it easy to tap into stations from around Australia and the world.
Both TuneIn and iHeartRadio run in a web browser or via range of mobile apps, plus you'll find TuneIn built into some Smart TVs. If you create an account you can save your favourites and sync preferences between devices.
When it comes to international stations iHeartRadio is very US-centric but has recently expanded to Australia and New Zealand. Outside of these three countries iHeartRadio only offers a handful of international stations to choose from. Meanwhile TuneIn offers 70,000 stations from around the world, making it easy to search by country and city.
When it comes to Australia, TuneIn offers access to more than 100 stations. Sydney offerings range from high-profile stations such as Triple M and 2GB to government broadcasters, regional networks and community stations such as FBi. Unfortunately, iHeartRadio is run locally by the Australian Radio Network so you can only listen to its handful of Australian stations such as MIX, Classic Hits and The Edge.
Considering its name iHeartRadio seems rather underwhelming, but its strength is that it offers Pandora-style custom stations. You can create a radio station based around a specific artist or song. Alternatively you can choose stations according to mood such as "Energetic" or activities such as "At The Gym". There's also a strong focus on talk radio with the new iHeartRadio Talk feature, which mixes talk radio with podcasts.
In comparison TuneIn doesn't offer custom stations and only supports basic genre-based searching such as Blues, Hip Hop and Metal. TuneIn also offers podcasts although it doesn't draw attention to them.
The verdict
If you just want to listen to traditional radio stations via the internet then TuneIn is definitely the way to go, especially if you're after non-English stations. iHeartRadio becomes more attractive if you're looking to create your own custom channels.
