Most active ingredients used in bug sprays are relatively stable and last a while. However, even if the active ingredients themselves don't expire, the overall formulation may become less effective over time. Check the back of your bug spray bottle to see what chemical it uses.

DEET and Picaridin have an almost infinite shelf life while IR3535 lasts around two years. Most brands recommend discarding bug spray after three years to ensure effectiveness.

This isn't necessarily because the product expires—but rather, it loses its efficacy. "The rule of thumb is about three years, but your actual mileage may vary depending on the type of bug spray you have and how it was stored," says Wong.

DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many repellent products.

Permethrin is another harmful chemical found in many bug sprays. This chemical is a neurotoxin, meaning it can kill brain cells. Permethrin is also extremely toxic to bees, cats, and all aquatic life. Not only is it hurting the body, it is also damaging the environment.

Picaridin is the active ingredient in many skin-applied insect repellents. Picaridin is a common active ingredient used in skin-applied insect repellents. While you'll see “Picaridin” on many OFF! brand labels, the chemical is also commonly referred to as “Icaridin”.

Using expired deodorant or antiperspirants won't likely harm your health. However, the formula or fragrance of the product may deteriorate so, if you've opened or used your deo, you should replace it every six to 12 months for best results (closed deodorants can last for more than a year).

Once you know a product is expired – throw it out! We know that can be hard, but gross bacteria near your eyes or lips is a recipe for infections or irritations. Your precious face deserves unexpired makeup!

If you use a pesticide product beyond its expiration date, it may or may not be less effective. Using a pesticide product beyond its expiration date doesn't necessarily mean the product has degraded to the point that it is no longer effective. Then again, there's no guarantee that it hasn't degraded.

Regardless of the type of pest treatment that was applied, a good general rule of thumb is to give pest control treatments 2-4 hours to set in and then an extra 30 min to breathe with windows open and fans on to allow fresh air to flow through before returning.

Pyrethrin & Pyrethroids

Pyrethrin and pyrethroids are pesticides used by exterminators.

The list of products we recommend changes slightly from year to year, but insect repellents whose active ingredient is deet, at concentrations of 25 to 30 percent, reliably earn our recommendation, as do many (but not all) 15 percent deet sprays.

Adverse reactions are very rare, about 1 in 100 million people. However, repeated use of DEET in very high concentrations can lead to toxic encephalopathy with severe neurological symptoms including seizures, tremors and slurred speech.

The product can cause eye irritation, though, so avoid getting it in your eyes or spraying it on your face. Don't use bug repellents made with oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on kids under 3. Oil of lemon eucalyptus and PMD are safe if you're pregnant.

DEET is shorthand for the chemical N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, the active ingredient in many insect repellents.

1. Pyrethrins are chemicals taken from chrysanthemum flowers that are poisonous to insects. The sun destroys pyrethrins very quickly, so when they are used for mosquito control, most of the active ingredients are gone within an hour when exposed to sunlight.

Maybe after the expiry it may not be that powerful to repel mosquitoes. It depends from one person to other and the time lapse in using it after expiry date. Better not use it after expiry date. Because skin (dermatological) issues take a while to get cured.
