Apple's iOS 26: The AI Feature That's Back with a Vengeance
It's a bold statement, but the return of notification summaries in iOS 26 is a significant move, especially considering its rocky past. This feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, is designed to give you the gist of news and entertainment updates without you having to dive into the apps themselves. But here's where it gets controversial: this wasn't always a smooth ride.
AI, in general, has been a hot topic, sparking debates on ethics, job security, and the spread of misinformation. Apple, however, initially seemed to sidestep major controversies with its AI image creation tools. They implemented guardrails to avoid the pitfalls seen with other companies.
But one feature did bring notable negative buzz: notification summaries for news.
The Initial Misstep: News Summaries Gone Wrong
When Apple Intelligence first launched, the notification summaries for news apps quickly became a point of contention. The system wasn't always accurate, and some of the errors were quite egregious. For example, there was a case where the AI incorrectly reported that Luigi Mangione had shot himself, attributing the false information to the BBC. This led to a significant backlash.
Apple's response was swift: they disabled notification summaries for both News and Entertainment apps. The latter category was included because apps like Podcasts and YouTube often have news-style notifications.
iOS 26: The Comeback Kid?
Fast forward to iOS 26, and the feature is back. Apple hasn't revealed all the changes, but they clearly feel confident enough to re-enable it for all users. The company has made improvements to the underlying summarization models to reduce errors. UI changes have also been implemented to make it clear that summaries may contain errors. For example, a red warning appears the first time you enable summaries, and a 'Summarized by Apple Intelligence' footer is now included in the notifications.
Have the Changes Worked?
So far, the results seem promising. Since the feature was re-enabled, reports of inaccuracies appear to be minimal. Anecdotally, the summaries seem to be more accurate. In iOS 18, inaccurate summaries were a weekly occurrence, but in the months since the feature's return, errors have been rare.
With the growing number of AI-capable devices and the time that has passed since the feature was last available, the user base has grown substantially. However, there's been a noticeable absence of negative feedback.
A Step in the Right Direction?
It's good to see that things are improving. When I first tested notification summaries in iOS 18, I found them one of the most useful AI features at the time.
