Gas Networks Ireland is leading the charge, transforming our energy landscape and ensuring a reliable, sustainable future. But here's where it gets controversial: the role of gas in this transition.

While many associate gas with carbon emissions, Ireland's gas network is undergoing a remarkable transformation. It's not just about the pipelines; it's about the clean, renewable gases they will carry.

The Current State: Gas's Vital Role
You might be surprised to learn that gas currently supplies a significant portion of Ireland's energy needs. It provides around 41% of our electricity, a figure that can rise to 83% during low wind conditions. In total, gas accounts for 30% of our primary energy. But it's not just about the numbers; gas is a reliable backup, a stabilizer for our renewable energy grid, ensuring energy security.

Gas Networks Ireland manages both the transmission and distribution networks. The transmission network, a high-pressure system, moves gas over long distances, bringing in gas from Scotland and domestic sources like the Corrib pipeline. This gas is then processed at Above Ground Installations (AGIs) before distribution to homes, schools, businesses, and industries.

The distribution network involves a low-pressure system connected to the transmission network via pressure reduction stations, ensuring safe and usable pressure levels for everyday use.

The Transition: Embracing Renewable Gases
As we integrate clean, renewable gases like biomethane and green hydrogen, the gas network's importance grows. Biomethane, already flowing through the network, is a renewable gas generated through anaerobic digestion, breaking down organic waste. This green gas can be injected into our existing network, cutting emissions in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like transport, manufacturing, and power generation. It also supports the agri-food sector's transition to a low-carbon future.

Projects like the €32 million Central Grid Injection facility (CGI) in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, are expanding the network to accommodate biomethane, enabling direct injection into the grid. Similarly, the entire network is being prepared for green hydrogen, a carbon-free, renewable gas produced through electrolysis, using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

At its Innovation Centre, Gas Networks Ireland collaborates with experts and universities to explore hydrogen's integration with the existing network, studying its effects on gas pipes and consumer equipment.

These renewable gas sources will revolutionize Ireland's energy consumption. The ambition is for renewable gases to continue growing, eventually dividing Ireland's gas network into two distinct networks: a national hydrogen network and a regional biomethane network.
