Is an M1 MacBook Still a Good Buy in 2023? (3)

Back in late 2022, I bought my 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip. Rocking a 1TB solid state drive and 16GB of RAM, my MacBook Pro keeps up with nearly anything I throw at it.

But would I recommend buying an M1 machine today, now that the M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max machines have hit the shelves and M3 is just around the corner?

A strong factor in considering this question is simple: how much power do you need out of your computer and how will you be using it? In my use, the M1 Pro chip in my MacBook Pro is more than sufficient for my needs.

For users who need basic productivity apps and don’t plan to push a machine to its limits, the M1 chip is more than enough even in 2023. And while the M2 chip is more powerful, the additional power may not be worth the money for some people.

And for those who need more power than an M1 can offer, the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are still great options.

However, for some workloads, the M1 Pro may not be enough. The M2 chips are slightly better — SSD speed issues in the base models aside. And the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips are fantastic.
